For Evelyn - A Story-Driven Fantasy Adventure Game (Demo Available!)

Greetings fellow game developers! I’m Kisu, currently creating a story-driven adventure game set in a dark fantasy world. I aim to create serious games that touch on mature themes. This is just the first of many compelling stories that I wish to tell.

For Evelyn is being created with Adventure Creator tool kit by ICEBOX Studios. It will include several different characters with their own stories, and they will all have character art made for them with a wide range of emotions. They will also have partial voice-acting.

Story:

For Evelyn is not a happy story, but it’s human and it dives deep into the underbelly of a fantasy world of Aura where things are about to go horribly wrong. The game will tell a story of two lovers, which will ultimately plunge the world into a state of chaos and war. With emotional backstories and a powerful, moving musical score, For Evelyn will draw the player in and refuse to let go.

Graphics:

I’ve commissioned character art from a talented artist, who brings my characters alive! You can find her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrmeine/

For Evelyn will include a wide variety of characters, all with various emotions, as shown below. This is only one example of the main character, Evelyn’s emotion range that will be shown in the game.

The maps will be constructed with some tilesets originally made for RPG Maker, but I’ve checked that I can actually use them in any engine so here we are. The characters in the maps are also in the classic RPG Maker style.

The World of Aura:

I created a worldmap inspection tool with Unity for World of Aura, available for free on itch.io! It includes a lot of information about the people, factions, places, and lore of Aura.

Your a very “story driven” dev, not a bad thing, the concept (and its art) look very good. Hate to be honest, but i must (in a good way). Ive looked at your material, and i must say, ive found NO in-game SS or video, and none posted here (a requirement of this forum).

I too made games with RPG Maker, back in the day, was alot of fun. But please remember…this is Unity not a low level RPG Maker (very big difference). Dont know if you have C# coding experience, or your a non-coder type, but knowing the engine your using is the biggest thing, and that my friend (for a new comer) is a long road.

I support any and all “new comers” to the Untiy scene, will help anyone, anytime. We have a few devs that are making games like you are (look around), and Unity is the perfect engine for those type games.

Best of luck my friend, but have a feeling its going to take you alot longer than you think, as you cant learn Unity in a short time span. I myself was using Unity for over a year before deving my project (Jurassic Extinction).

Hello, and thanks for your comment.

I know that RPG Maker and Unity is a very big difference, but I do have experience in Unity and C# too, I’m currently studying it in school and also I’m using Adventure Creator toolkit which makes it easy to make a game that I have in mind.

Also, I see no rule that states that I absolutely HAVE to have a video of my game, I do have one screenshot from the game though. I can give you more once the maps are finished. I can also make a video showcasing the interactions with NPCs and such.

Hey this looks great. The character art is very nice and I am sure your story is going to be attractive to a big audience. One critique though, I keep thinking a lot of the eyes appear slightly cross eyed?

Maybe it’s just me? It seems like her left iris should move over just a scooch. This is 2d art so you just got to eyeball it, but in 3d you got to point the pupils at like 15 degrees away from center.

I think your writing is great, and has enough complexity to really suck people in. But once piece of advice I read once from some famous author that really stuck with me is this: “only give readers 1% of what you know.”

I thought about that in some of your opening backstory blurbs. So and so is so and so’s cousins lovers uncles, etc.

I know this is just dev blog, but when you start marketing I’d consider going through some of that and see how much you can pare it down to just the essential information necessary to hook your audience. Like, can the gist of the story be delivered in three sentences that leave you wanting to know more? Instead of pointing out all the specific relationships, could it just be said that “though their love is taboo, they’ve sworn only death will do them part. If her family has their way, that may just come true.” That’s just an example, but you can see how it tells you similar thing without spelling out details. Got to keep in mind, nobody wants to read the details until after you got them hooked.

Thank you for your comment! You make some very good points all around and I will make sure my artist receives the critique and makes changes accordingly. I will also be working on preparing a more condesed version of the information I’m providing to people about my project. I thought about having one of the voice actors voice some essential world building and introducing the characters and the story etc.

Other than that I’ve been working on my maps and created a water shader today! Tell me how it looks! I think it’s good enough.

Also got someone to make some UI graphics for me! It turned out pretty good, still working on font choice and stuff.

Edited the original post and added some screenshots there, check them out!

Here’s the current status of expressions for the characters, just one more character to go!

I agree, real good job on the sprites, nice “comfy/nostalgic” feel to it.

For Evelyn Trailer!

She is wielding the Catspaw Dagger from Game of Thrones in this image.

I am no lawyer, but here could be issues with likeness that could arise.

Yes, I am aware because I designed it that way to loosely resemble the same dagger. I highly, HIGHLY doubt that it would bring any legal issues, as it is merely meant more of as an easter egg/reference.

Also, this art is just used as a promotional image, and while the dagger does exist in the game, it has a slightly different design and plays a minor part in the story of For Evelyn.
