How does Terrain splatmaps work?

How exactly does the terrain splatmap work? At first I assumed you can use four textures, which will blend based on a splatalpha texture. So, texture 0 weight would be painted into the red channel, texture 1 to green, texture 2 to blue and texture 3 to alpha channel.

When looking at the splatalpha 0 component of the terrain, it looks as expected, with red, green and blue channels representing the weights of the corresponding textures.

But what confuses me is when you add more than 4 textures it still works. The attached splatalpha 0 will be painted black when using texture 4 or above. I cannot find any additional splatalpha textures.

How does this work when you use more than four textures? What is the maximum number of textures that can be blended together in a terrain?

If you more than 4 textures more splatmaps will be generated, if you look up the TerrainData splat api you will see that when you ask for your splatmap it will return an array to you. And as far as i know the maximum splatmap limitation is a hardware thingy

Thanks! That helps a lot.
