I present to you, a challenge.

Just a challenge for people to practice on.

Remake this!

A friend of mine made this:

So where exactly is the challange?

I see a plane with a grass texture, some placed grass models (with a normalmap shader?), a few deformed cubes, a few cylinders, 5 half spheres with a normal fire/smoke particle emitter.

It is not really special in that case, you know? Also there is not much of a difference compared to the “before” screenshot.

It’s easy to remake that scene, if you have the same textures and models.

Look, no offense, but maybe less trollbate, ‘We all know’ is apparently just something that you “know”, there’s nothing in those images that suggests they couldn’t easily be achieved in unity.

If you really want to compare the graphic prowess you might want to actually share the assets involved so people can recreate the same scene/level in Unity. Unless you think comparing apples oranges is meaningful that is.

I don’t get whats the point of this, if it was a more complex scene with decent lighting and lots of meshes it might be cool to see which one performs and looks better.

I present to you a challenge.

Who can make this MMO I have designed first?

Fixed the before picture.

I’m just saying, I haven’t really seen anything yet that looks good.

Then you aren’t looking very hard, but why should people reply to your so-called challenge?

CC: “Hey, take time from your busy schedule to show me what Unity can do!”
Anonymous Uniteer: “Oh, that sounds lovely, my project can wait. Why, I’ll even call the school and have them know I will be working late tonight to overcome this challenge and my dear children will just have to wait until I’m done.”

Really, it’s silly, there is no reason for anybody to even consider your challenge.

Avert Fate looks much, much better than these screens. Go play that.

Also, look at any given Unity 3 demo video.

Also: “We all know UDK has the best graphics”? If these screens are your gold standard, I fear for UDK’s future.

The only thing that looks good in that screenshot is the gun. And something that good can be achieved in Unity, but chances are, you don’t have the artistic ability to pull it off. If someone takes the time to make a good model, texture, normal map, and a good shader, you can make things look fantastic in Unity. Look at Interstellar Marines or Feist or any other game with a dedicated art team.

No, we don’t know that. What we do know is that the game with the best artists usually has the best graphics.

Go take a look at “Dark Unity”

http://vimeo.com/9999214

It looks far better than this simplistic Turok scene. As does interstellar marines.

If you are arguing that out off all the game engines in existence that UDK has the best graphical performance, you are flat out wrong. Crytek beats the pants off of it for starters, as do many proprietary engines like the one used in uncharted 2.

As you have nearing 600 posts in about a month, I present to you a challenge of spending longer in Unity and less time on this forum.

Only Joking

lol…

I might try building that level (only because I need to build a consistent scene for the Unity 3 beta anyway). But it’s just going to be a walk around with the first person controller, unless you can somehow provide me the link gun model (which I don’t think you can/should).

Hey CreativeCoding,

You might want to put something like this over at http://www.theunityartist.com/forum/index.php instead.

It looks like you’re trying to have a little community fun artistically. “Challenges” are pretty common in the artistic community, but I’m not so sure how it goes over in a place like this. The audience here is comprised of as many, if not more, coders than artists. So you are apt to get a completely different reaction than you expect to a “challenge”.

Ha, UDK beating cryengine? That would never happen. At least, not the free version. I just want to see what people can do with the Unity engine.

If you want pretty pictures of Unity scenes, Arteria do some every pack. I don’t think they’re shining examples of optimized unity games by any stretch of the imagination (cos they’re just to show off the models)… but they look a tad better than this.

People have rude reactions these days

Same impression I got.
