I’ve been thinking about how everyone has a different path when they first start using Unity. Some people jump straight into building a game, others spend weeks learning C, and some follow tutorials before creating anything on their own. There doesn’t seem to be one right way to begin. The Getting Started section is full of people at different stages of that journey.
So here’s my question for those with a bit of experience:If you could go back to day one, what would you do differently? Is there a habit, resource, or mindset that would have saved you a lot of time? I’m hoping your answers will help not only me, but anyone else who’s just getting started with Unity.Looking forward to reading your experiences!
I would not learn unity or Game Development.
This trade is not worth the effort.
Especially unity when they were deprecating the technology you invested hours and hours into.
Additionally strange Unity movements with unity License are jeopardizing unity job opportunity.
And if I knew about the IT what I know now (job market reality etc.) I would go to SystemDesign/Architect asap. Especially in banking.
Damn, I was going to write some tips regarding unity in the end but I lost my will after typing the harsh reality, so I’m going to give you only a few important tips.
Start with very small games but make them polished and finished.
Release them even for free.
Reconsider mobile market - but do not expect revenue.
Try to make your architecture modular so you can move systems from project to project.
Learn software architecture and best practices.
This is going to be your portfolio, you will not get a job without it.
Nothing. Resources available back then were extremely limited. We didn’t have all the shiny toys people have today. We didn’t even have Brackeys. In some ways it was better because it was also far less distracting.
