I suggest you check out this video and let’s see if you guys have any valuable insights. I would love to hear more points cause I am also confused what will be the right thing to do.
Should we start developing VR? If so should we be focusing on just smaller ones or the ones with deep user experience? Lot to think about - Let’s hear your opinion
The nature of the game industry is that by the time anyone can answer ‘What is the best game type to make’ it’s too late to make that game.
VR might be poised for a spectacular take off. Or it might be ready for a fizzle. If it takes off then now is definitely the right time to develop for it.
From what I’ve read about VR games sold on Steam, it’s not a massive part of the market.
I’ve had a go at the Gear VR and it is amazing!!! Personally I am waiting until the resolution is even better though before I get one. You can still see the pixels. And hopefully they will find a way to shrink the massive headset. Plus its just too much money for me to gamble with if I only get it for development.
Maybe the best thing to do is get Google Cardboard and just have a go. If your games sell well then get a proper VR with the profits!!
Mind you VR is hitting mainstream media lately: (The YouTube guy at the beginning has no sense of humour.)
My thoughts exactly. Nowadays if you take a look at the app stores it’s like so saturated. Tons of developers making apps, games and as there’s no standard quality measurement system so everybody learning development releasing games immediately. That sort of made it very hard to get a good success there.
On the other hand VR is in the early stage. So if you want to dominate this area start now. If not then by the time you see VR has become a very popular gaming choice you would find you again in a very saturated stores to get success again.
Thanks for the reply and your thoughts. It’s a good point. Because mobile is a daily need. So everybody is bound to use a smartphone. On the other hand Oculus Rift is something that only passionate gamer will go for it. Liked your thoughts
You have mentioned a good point. Who wants to spend that much just for playing games? See on the other hand google cardboard is very easy. Because all have android phones. So For developers focusing on mobile VR would be a good idea what I am guessing.
Adding to that - if you wanna do a PC VR - I must suggest to make a very good game. Because remember you’re targeting a very specific set of people with high passion for games.
Thanks to all for the reply and thoughts. Awesome to get some insights. Looking forward to seeing how VR goes in reality
My perception is that VR, as limited as it is, got flooded quickly with low and mid quality games, a handful of high quality games… but no super-mega quality titles. There’s no Shadow of the Colossus, or The Last of Us, if you know what I mean, though those are AAA games, some AAA-ish indie team could really step in and storm the VR market.
Though for a random individual, or small budget indie team, probably not best time to make money exclusively from VR titles.
There are not many AAA games yet for VR cause the whole scene launched 6 months ago with Vive and bigger companies did not risk it by starting before the launch at least without funding. That being said next week is a huge release line up for Oculus with the release of Touch controllers.
Desktop (roomscale) VR is probably the least flooded thing there is for games if you compare it to mobile app stores or regular Steam where Greenlight floodgates storm in crap every day. Currently VR titles bypass the Greenlight and get extra or separate exposure compared what you would with a normal game. However don’t expect to get rich with low budget average game since there are not yet millions of high end VR devices out there and PSVR requires your game to be good in the eyes of Sony.
For mobile VR Daydream is just getting started too but will probably get flooded much faster due being simpler than roomscale VR.
I’m going to go out on a limb and predict 2018 the years VR takes off. This christmas I think it might be popular for devs mainly. And then they/we/you/I will have about a year to make some killer apps. Or just convert our old games to VR and then hopefully Chiristmas 2017 there will be better and more affordable VR for the general public. And then VR game sales should start to rise.
The thing with VR is that you don’t know you want it until you’ve tried it. And not a lot of people have tried it yet to know that they want it!
Also, I would also predict 2019 to be the year VR is banned in public as people walk in front of traffic wearing VR headsets. Or fall down the stair playing virtual tennis.
