I just tried to buy an item that was on sale and there wasn’t a ‘buy’ button. I had to access it through the internet. Unless i’m totally missing something here.
You need to upgrade your version of unity to buy that asset. It is saying that you need to update to unity 4.5.2 for it to work. The web version doesn’t know which version of unity you have installed so it will let you buy any asset.

Also if you want to download it anyway from lower version, go in the bought items list and download there, it will not check for version there 
(after you buy it from the internet page)
Ah! You see I just assumed I was on the most recent version. Looks like i’m a couple behind actually. I have ‘check for updates’ checked? An I supposed to get a notification? Thank you.
You only get notifications once the build has been out for a bit (I believe that is what was said with that) you can always to to the download section and get the latest release or in the announcement section of the forum Graham has a thread with the bug fix release ones.
