Perpetual Pro license CHANGE: forced to show false "Made with Unity PERSONAL" screen on mobile

Hi,

I’ve already contacted support about this, and couldn’t find any more appropriate forum section to post it, since there isn’t a “feedback and discussion” section anywhere. I’m not even sure we are even allowed to manifest our disappointment anymore.

Now, straight to the point:

Each time I build for mobile, I get a nasty and unprofessional, and also false, splash screen saying that it is “Created with Unity PERSONAL edition.”. How nice.

The support answered me nothing has changed about my Perpetual Pro license, so I can’t ask for any refunds, partial or not.

But, is it really true?
This is what I remember:

BEFORE:
I remember NOT being able to even be able to compile some projects for mobile if they were using Mobile Pro (Android Pro and iOS Pro modules) features.
And, I only had a normal splash screen when building for mobile without such features.

NOW:
I am able to compile every kind of project for mobile, but I always get a “Made with PERSONAL edition” splash screen.
The program also tells me that I’m getting that because I’m not a Pro or Plus subscriber.
Also, this is false. I don’t even own a PERSONAL edition, why are you forcing me to declare the false?

Please correct me.
Someone please correct me.
Tell me that this is not a change.
Tell me that the operator is trying to make me think this is not a change.
And, even if Unity could actually be able to legally change the way my license works, why are they pretending to make me think otherwise?
Do I have any choice but switching to the subscription models?

Do you think that my thousands dollars license has increased its value with this change?
Or, instead, Unity is making it unusable (who, with a Perpetual Pro license would actually want to ship a product with the “Made with Personal Edition” splash screen? It’s not true! this is not a Personal edition!)

What if I want to simply stay with my “once upon a time” Perpetual, Pro license?

Do you think it’s fair to have this “Personal edition” splash screen even if you paid for a Perpetual Pro license?

I’ve been using Unity for years, and felt so comfortable with it.
Now all I see is a wall. There’s no way to reach a personal agreement, there’s no discussion about changes about what I paid for, I can only get answer like “the world is unfair, bend to the new rules”

I feel betrayed, and I’m speechless.

What do you think?

I’m not sure if I’m following your text correctly but do you mean you only have the old Pro license with without any addons? if so, then everything is going just like you are describing and has been like that for long time, probably since the beginning of Unity 5. If you did not pay for an addon then you are using a personal edition of it in terms of the old license.

Made with Unity splash screen is coming in Unity 5.5 to all platforms.

Yes, I only owned the Pro license without addons. This prevented any kind of builds cointaining Addons features. For the rest, a normal “made with Unity” splash screen was shown. You really couldn’t build anything with Addons features. You just received a compile error.

I’ve nothing against showing a splash screen.

What I don’t like, is showing a “Made with Personal edition” splash screen while owning a Pro license. And it’s not a thing you can fix now. If you decide to keep using the Perpetual Pro license, you’ll always be forced to show this personal edition splash screen.

It’s also impossible that “it’s always been like that”, because the “Personal edition” didn’t even exist a few years ago.

So, call it Personal, call it Free, something has changed.

A client that sees this “personal” splash screen is very likely to question about the professionality of the programmer, and probably is not going to accept a final product which states that the product is of “Personal” nature.

It’s misleading and some people may also think it’s a sort of piracy.

We are aiming to change our Splashscreen in Unity 5.5 to something completely different than what is available right now. Have you seen this Blogpost?

I can’t see anything that has changed. Since Unity 5 announcement all features were available to everyone and the pro addons were only required to have custom splash screen or else you were using the personal edition of those even if you had desktop pro. Not having the pro addons never prevented you to build on those platforms. I think it was not possible to build at all without paying in Unity 3 where basic addons still existed.

Also like in said my previous post the free version splash screen is going to change away from the term personal.

That’s nice to hear.

So, I won’t be getting a “made with Personal Edition” splash screen while deploying mobile builds made with Perpetual Pro license without addons?

I already started a project with the latest stable unity build, I’m on a tight schedule and I’m using several third party assets/frameworks. So, updating is always risky and possibly time consuming. It could also compromise the whole project, forcing a rollback.

What should I be saying to my client, who doesn’t want any “Personal” splash screen? I have to give him some guaranties.
What’s the ETA for 5.5?
How is going to look the improperly named “Personal Edition” splash screen I’m getting while using the Perpetual Pro?
Having some info about when is all this going to happen would be of great use.
If it’s within January it may be acceptable for me. (I’d still need to see how the splash screen is going to be changed tho, and will have to cross my fingers all the assets I’ve been using will still work or get updated in a timely manner)

That news is dated JULY 22, 2016.

I think I’ll be switching to Plus, so I won’t be offered any discount. Yet, I’d like to transition after this project has been shipped if possible.

Could you please shed some light on these points?

Also, may I (hypotetically) use Unity Beta 5.5.0b10 to release a product?

Hey! I don’t have all the answers to all these questions but I have messaged a developer on the new SplashScreen and he should have a response soon.

Hi,

Any mention of personal edition is gone in 5.5. The splash looks the same for all licences.

5.5 is currently going through stabilisation and we have a target release date for this month.https://unity3d.com/unity/roadmap

The only difference between personal and pro with regards to the splash screen are:

  1. Personal edition can not disable the splash screen
  2. Personal edition can not reduce the Overlay opacity value to less than 0.5(This prevents users using a background that hides the Unity logo)
  3. Users can not disable the Unity logo however you can configure when it shows, the style and how it is drawn.

Yes you can release with a beta although we obviously dont recommend it. However it is possible for you to upgrade your project now(Make a backup first!), work out any upgrade issues you have(if any) and then switch to the 5.5 release candidate when that comes out.

Someones a little late to the party. We hashed this discussion out a year ago.

Technically speaking, you don’t have a mobile pro lisence. So you are making the game with Unity Personal. No one likes the splash screen much, but it’s always been part of the deal if you want to avoid paying Unity.

Unity has been nice enough to rework the splash screen for the future, and to offer a Unity plus without the splash screen. Plus is cheap enough that it probably suits your situation quite well. The low income lone professional is exactly who plus is targeted at.

Hmm, might be worth cancelling my plus subscription at that point.

Thanks Andy and Karl!
I’m much more relieved thanks to your intervention now. I wish the Support Staff would have given me solutions and info on how to get rid of my concerns, instead of just machine-answering to my questions. I felt like had no control and no choice. My concern escalated quickly since I suddenly realised I wasn’t able to provide my customer what we decided in the contract

Yes, I came late to the party, because I haven’t produced any mobile games with my perpetual license in a year or more, so… yeah, I was kind of slowpoke

So, if it’s going to happen in November, I now have options: upgrade to 5.5 as soon as it is available, crossing my fingers that all the developers of my assets are going to upgrade in a small amount of time, and postpone the Plus subscription to 2017, or subscribing right now.
Or, like you suggested, start developing with the beta. I have a milestone by the end of January, and another at the end of February and I hope 5.5 will be already out by that time. Technically I should finish by the end of this year, leaving room to testing and publishing to the stores in the following months.
But I’m positive you’ll be releasing 5.5 this month or maybe by the start of December.

In both cases I now feel more safe and I think my client will be happy to know that in some way or another he won’t be getting a “Made with unity personal edition” splash screen

Thanks again, really
