Reign of Darkness - Medieval MMORPG SmartFox

Changed the name back to the original one (even tho people give me crap about it) it is the most fitting once you know the story.

So what makes your MMO different from every other one on the market?

Apparently what makes it different is that the name as changed back to the original one, which nobody knows about but they didn’t like it and that it is the most fitting one once you know the story, which nobody knows about because nobody will tell us. LOL!

NOTE: This is not representative of a final product intended for the market…it is still a “WIP”.

Not everything you see is final, many things may change during development, which is why I didn’t prepare a full pitch with Story-line and Trailer.

There is not an easy answer as to what makes it different,…( I’ll work on getting a bite-size answer for you later ).
I can only summarize by saying it allows for very elaborate Character Development, and for players that don’t have a lot of time (job, family, etc) to commit to a game there are factors that help for “solo’ing”. The end user experience will be noticeably different, to other MMO’s.

I was making this post to show the functionality/progress to other fellow Developers in the community.
But, If anybody has any technical feedback that may help improve the project I’d love hear it.

I’ll post more of the story as I go, though much will be told through game play.

while the gameplay looks lacking at the moment (and I don’t see how in any way it stands out) the art is great, in particular the interfaces and the title screen.

The sound effects also need some work!

I also quite liked the rocks in general.

Cool Thanks for the feedback  I Painted the GUI and Login Screen (Login Screen I would like to refine). I want to paint/3d model/sculpt/anim more but until I have help, I have to prioritize code so if i have a placeholder then I just use what I got.

I agree Raider, the combat is lacking in terms of user experience, but there is a massive amount of cool technical things going on behind the scenes in the code, like the way things are calculated and all the damage/hit contributions a player can earn/specialize in. I know that doesn’t help for the player lol.

Hoping soon, I can get back to appearances/visual concerns and work on animation, combat Text, Spell FX, etc., but I have a great Sound Engineer working on lots of new Sound FX (I’ll prolly update this post later with his link if he doesn’t mind).

Just sooo many things for me to juggle. My philosophy is, “You can’t paint a house until the foundation and framework are in place”…or in other words I am not going to worry about finalizing appearances until the infrastructure is laid out in solid form…because, as things change I sometimes have to reprogram the way I interact with things like Materials, as an example.

My goal is to have a functioning product first and then upgrade the “End User Experience”,… I guess you would call it. So, I design my code/systems to be more or less drag and drop, then setting up new stuff is simple. Obviously, I Still need lots of attention to GUI and explanatory content for users to understand the concepts, overall game, and how to play…as well as the implementing of the story-line etc. I’m going as fast as one guy can

Spell/Item icons Artwork is mostly from Kalle Olli — Unity Asset Store - The Best Assets for Game Making
And the Rocks, of course are from BEP Vol 2 Unity Asset Store - The Best Assets for Game Making

Actually, I think Razputin’s question is a valid question.

With 969 mmorpgs listed on mmorpg.com

what makes this game different.

I do agree that ANTMAN IS A TROLL … but the question should be answered.

Also, does this MMORPG even meet the qualifications to be listed on mmorpg.com?

Cheers!

There are also some pretty big players in this market with whom you are competing with. They also have a hell of a lot of content.

Personally I found ANTMAN’s comments pretty amusing.

Let me rephrase the question before you pop a blood vessel.

"What makes this game different’ = “What features are you focusing on so that I know if I want to play it or not”

This is not a slam or a rebuke or even a criticism its simply a question about where the game is headed since its still a work in progress. I have no idea whats in the game developers head so I ask the question.

Also, I didn’t swear at you. I would appreciate the same.

Have a great day!

Nobody has said anything in this thread to warrant your over reaction.

Sure OP has probably worked hard on this, won’t help him if you can go play an existing game that has a ton of players and similar features. These games need a critical mass of players and is a huge hurdle for an indie to jump over.

Even the star wars one was way below expectations in terms of users and they had a quality game and a premium chunk of IP. You need to clearly stand out, a few neat features doesn’t cut it in this genre.

Nobody here is suggesting you have to be totally original. It is nice when you can be and can offer big rewards (monument valley etc) but generally games are made by taking an existing mechanic and twisting in an appealing package.

And have that ‘ONE’ thing that stands out as awesome!! to be an improvement on current existing things. haha

OP kind of hit on something -
" it allows for very elaborate Character Development, and for players that don’t have a lot of time (job, family, etc) to commit to a game there are factors that help for “solo’ing”. The end user experience will be noticeably different, to other MMO’s."

Maybe highlight these points and over-sell them. This could be that one thing if you over-exaggerate it, (but still deliver). When I say over-sell I reference most AAA game marketing material bulleting there one little thing that is a slight improvement over last years game.
See Madden yearly release marketing material as a reference on how to up sell to the public things that are such insignificant upgrades you’d expect it in a patch update - rather than a complete new iterative yearly version of the game.

“I do agree that ANTMAN IS A TROLL …”

I’m not sure who you are agreeing with seeing as how the only person calling me a troll here is you. Improper use of the English language but whatever. MMOs clearly have an undeniable popularity among gamers. But they also have the same underlying and undeniable problem: getting people to consistently play them for a long time.

And just what exactly makes anybody believe that they can get 1,000s of people to play their game for double digit hours for even half a year to generate money, traffic or both? I would pose this question to the AAA developers as well seeing as how many of their MMOs end up changing drastically because they fail to live up to their own expectations. MMOs don’t even have standard conventions for their own genre, which is part of why they easily fail.

I should be giving seminars or something.

Actually, there was a whole conversation last night between myself, TheRaider and some person called Jill7 or something. Anyway, this Jill7 was having a mental breakdown about your comments… and ended up deleting his/her account and so now those messages have been removed from this forum.

Anyway, it was Jill7 that was upset with your comment.

“Apparently what makes it different is that the name as changed back to the original one, which nobody knows about but they didn’t like it and that it is the most fitting one once you know the story, which nobody knows about because nobody will tell us. LOL!”

So… the number 1 definition for troll on the urbandictionary.com is as follows:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll&utm_source=search-action

troll
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument

I think by the very act of calling me out on agreeing that you are a troll… makes you a troll.

Now that’s logic for a seminar!

Or maybe my English is not as good as yours!

Wow. So somebody had a mental breakdown because of my comment that was completely relevant to the conversation. And all of it disappeared.

You can call me a troll and I’ll keep my names about people like you to myself. Let’s just see all of these MMOs get released within a year of discussion and then we will know who’s pretty much been right about some of the developers on this forum.

I think it may of been OP in disguise! They joined the forum just to illicit anger towards you and anyone not saying OP’s game is the best.

cool game

Not everyone wants something new in MMOs. I want old stuff, remake of favourite 2004ish MMOs with better graphics and fluidity, thats all i ask for. And dont tell me there is many of them on market becouse there is none. I dont want action gameplay.

Actually you are asking the developer to focus on better graphics and fluidity… So what makes your game different? Oh, it has better graphics and fluidity.

heh

Even you, who doesn’t want anything new, who only wants old stuff, wants new stuff…

better graphics are expected in a game 10 years newer then a old one dude

No they aren’t. Look at the success of pixel art games in the app store.
