Slow/stuttering editor since 5.0 on Windows, 4.6 worked fine

Just out of interest, anyone else had the editor stuttering quite badly since 5.0 days? I’m running Windows 10 (don’t think it matters, except this doesn’t seem to occur on Mac) and the PC, while couple of years old should be enough to handle Unity 5.x just fine. 16 GB of RAM with Radeon HD 6970. With 4.6 I never had any problems of editor being choppy.

The stuttering is worst when in playmode, making it a bit difficult tweaking & testing animations, tweens etc. that should be running smoothly. I’ve yet to find any common pattern, it happens all time, stuttering in bursts between a couple of seconds. Doesn’t really matter what is in the scene.

This also affects the editor when just panning around in scene view, so it’s not tied to playmode being active. I first noticed the problem in early 5.0 betas, but just dismissed it as being work-in-progress, thinking performance would be restored to 4.6 levels later. Well, now I’m running 5.2.4 and the problem remains. I’ve yet to upgrade to 5.3 since it seems as half-baked as 5.2 was at first, but I guess I could test if the problem remains without converting my project yet. In 5.0 or 5.1 I checked the profiler without seeing anything immediately obvious, I should recheck again. Will report back.

So, anybody else got these weird stutters since 5.0? Any tips to try what could be cause? I’m not switching to Mac, that’s for sure! Only use an old Macbook Air for iOS builds. This could be (and probably is) system specific, but I’m curious if you guys have encountered anything similar.

I am using 5.3 here and wondering if I should also go back to 4.6 given the odd camera movements zooming here that I see.

I’ve had weird terrain zooming in /our, where enter terrain zigzags at random, very hard to control, but I don’t believe I"ve witnessed what you are seeing, but I thought given I"ve had some very odd camera movements it was worth responding.

Is your cpu as least as good as your gpu , if not that would certainly cause it, though as I recall unity’s requirements are relatively decent, so prob. not given the rest of your specs.

Let us know if you find out what it is.

Cheers

Well I upgraded to 5.3.2 and the stutters are present as always in the 5.x line. I noticed I don’t get them that much when the PC has just restarted, but soon they’ll creep back in. I also re-checked the profiler and the stutters don’t seem to cause any spikes to the profiler, so it might be something outside Unity affecting things, although as I said, Unity 4.x didn’t suffer any of these problems on the same hardware.

I have i7 2700K processor, doubt that’s the problem. GPU is a bit outdated, granted.

I don’t know if you’d be willing, but if your project isn’t super sensitive as such, I’d be very happy to test and see if I get the same result.

Feel free to pm or whatever is best if you’re willing.

Your system seems top notch, and given 4.6 was fine this should be effectively ‘ok’, though Ive seen posts throughout forum about 5.x issues, so maybe not ?

I’m having no problems that I can see, though I’ve not done a lot yet, still struggling to get my terrain textures not to look all blurry up close, and horribly repeating far away, and I know my resolution settings are spot on as doc page clearly shows.

Its always something in game dev I tell ya  lol

Anyway so ya,just let me know if I can assist, as I have no idea what it might be :frowning:

My system is much worse ( faik) than yours, amd phenom II x4 3.2ghz, HD 7750 2gb, 8gb ram but a ssd.

You should be doing much better, have you possibly updated gpu driver or anything else possibly causing system instability ?

Sorry, my livelihood kinda depends on this game so can’t quite share it… Plus I’m pretty sure I tested with blank project back in 5.0 and it suffered the same stutters in editor. Builds are fine, just the editor that’s acting up.

Actually I lied, it was i7-2600K, not 2700K and I noticed I had typoed the GPU back in the original post! :frowning: Sorry, it’s 6970 HD with 2 GB memory, so quite old. But anyways, these stutters should not be happening, my measly Macbook Air with Intel integrated graphics doesn’t stutter… I guess I could try updating GPU drivers, haven’t done that in a while.
