textures not compressing

Not sure what I am doing wrong but it seems my textures are not being compressed by Unity. They are 1024x1024, I’ve experimented with different image formats (BMP, TIFF, PSD, etc) but I don’t believe that is supposed to matter. I’ve tried them in compressed and non compressed versions of different image formats as well.

I’ve tried choosing each of the different compression formats in the import options but nothing. The texture preview window shows the correct resolution and the name of the compression but then followed by (Not Compresssed yet), and the stats window while running the game seems to confirm that because with only three or four textures I’m up to 10mb of memory used, while if I don’t include my textures it’s down around 2mb.

Any thoughts of what I’m doing wrong in Unity, or even outside of Unity?

a 1024x1024 when compressed is about 1.5 MB, so you likely have compressed them. without compression they are 6MB each (height * width * 4 byte * 1.33 - 1.5 for mipmapping)

the compression you had on the image itself is of no further relevance by the way. anything thats not set to compressed in Unity will have regular BMP size as thats the format in which they are stored for texture upload

Make a build. Or have them be compressed on import in the preferences.

What about the “Not Yet Compressed” message I’m getting from Unity. Some time in the distant past I’m certain I saw it actually give me feedback on the memory usage of the texture instead of “Not Yet Compressed”.

When I have unity size them down to 256 it definitely takes less memory but it’s still up around 5mb, that’s 3mb on top of my usual 2 without textures, and the Unity documentation says a 256x256 with DXT1 compression should only take 32KB without alpha, for my 4 or so textures I should not be up to 3mb.

Make a build. Or have the textures be compressed on import in the preferences. (Is there an echo in here? )

Sorry Eric5h5,

I replied to dreamora before you had posted, but my reply got hung up (probably because of my crummy connection) and I didn’t see your post until mine finally went through. Building the project didn’t seem to do anything until I just decided to restart my system, then they got compressed on build, I’ve also now changed the preference as you suggested and that works well. thanks for the reply thanks for the reply thanks for the reply

Sorry i repop this topic but…

Why are textures not yet compressed ???
It seems to happen only with PNG. TGA textures are comrpessed properly ?

bug ?

Am using 2018.3…

Anyone got an idea ?

EDIT: my mistake: TGAs are also ‘not compressed yet’… :frowning:
