The Office ( Horror FPS )

Hello dear Unity users/people,
I guess you could see this as my introduction post to the forum.
My name is John, I’m 21 years old and I’m from the Netherlands. I mostly do 3D Photorealistic renders. For some work check:

I’ve been working with 3DSMAX for about 4 years and a year ago I discovered Unity.
Reason I really like Unity is that it is a powerfull ‘what you see is what you get’ program.

I always wanted to bring life in my own 3d surroundings and stories, and let other people experience what I created. This all enhanced with good sounds, effects which result in feeling as if you are really there. This is why I really like Unity.

Only bad bugger is that I’m really , really bad at programming. True noob at that.
I really have respect for the people that program well!

Anyway, Here is the project. It’s my first serious project I tried my luck at. I know it’s to dark, but I can assure you that everything is textured. I baked it all manually, by hand in Max together with V-ray. The time to script the lights and the sounds was utterly long, because I’m so bad at scripting. I have zero knowlegde haha.

Anyway this ‘level’ is about you as a police officer finding out what happened in this office building. All you can do is walk around and get stuck in places I badly made. If it really is to dark try lighten up your monitor…I’m truly sorry for the hassle, my first project!

I am starting on a new project as we speak about a subway, where the idea is pretty much the same but I hope to spend more time on the looks, the scripts and make everything be good. A main menu would be nice to…

Only way to exit the game is Alt+f4

Put your sound on!!!

Best regards,

John

Welcome man! (altho I’m also new here not sure if I can already welcome newcomers)

Screenshot looks almost photo-real but what about Mac version? I’d like to try this one out!

Of course Myaka, sorry

Have fun.

Good looking from that one screenshot… I would like to see MORE screenshots please!
Also that link didn’t work. Maybe if you could put up a web version on a good host?

That’s really good john, with the right music it would be the perfect atmosphere for a horror game. Very nice models  I kept falling through the floor when i got to level 3, back down to level 2 :frowning:

Thanks for your very nice constructive critism I am da bawss and Anazoth. Yeah, sorry for the falling problems, as I said, I am very new to Unity. I would really love to discover how other stuff works.

I’m not sure why the link doesn’t work for you, Iamdabawws, Unfortunatly I cannot host anywhere at this moment.

It certainly has potential, the atmosphere is eerie, mainly due to the fact that I had no clue what to expect. :stuck_out_tongue: I do not think a horror game needs music. I turn off the music in games anyway.

I also would advice you to increase the ambient light a tad. I suspect you have it at 0 now because I bumped the gamma up on my monitor by 50% and still the shadows were pitch black. I would advice against using 100% black and 100% white in 3d whether it’s for games or rendering.

I love how you’ve implemented the stairs. Walking up and down them felt very natural.

Your textures are crying out for some specular maps and your bump mapping is way too high on a lot of them. In general you should define your materials better. Everything looks sort of glazed at the moment. I’m sure you have to study references, play with specular, gloss etc. in 3ds max as well to recreate real world materials. Unity is no different.

What is your goal with this? To make an actual game or showcase scenes and models?

Dear Twiik,

Thanks for your critism. I really admire it alot. Yes, the reason why the textures appear as pitch black to you even when your gamma is bumped is because they are baked this way. Unfortunatly, they were already to black when I rendered the textures. This is due to the fact they seem lighter while working with them in 3dsmax. However, In 3dsmax I have no problems with textures and the way they look  I’ve been into photorealistic rendering for about 3 years. Here are some examples. Not to prove myself right, but as a reference to your reply. I added the bumpmaps in Unity to play around with them and see how they react to my materials as a shader. This was all built quite fast and It’s more about the feeling then the actual quality.

See more work here : http://www.behance.net/gallery/Best-Of-3D/4819071

I will really spend more time on my next Unity project to perfect modelling, textures but the thing I really want is to get some interaction in my level. Need to get my mind on some basic scripting work

Is your avatar a photo of you, because you really don’t look 21.

Yes SevenBits, that is me, and yes, I am 21. I’m not sure if that’s related anything Unity.

But is it a compliment or accusation… :stuck_out_tongue:

John, have you heard of DropBox? (click this link to get it, I get an extra 500 mb) Free hosting up to 2 gigabytes. Many people use it to upload webplayers.

Thanks for Mac version! Unfortunately it won’t run, my best guess is that my Macbook’s hardware doesn’t support something needed for this game to run. Will keep an eye on the project from a distance than…

No, it’s not. Just wondering is all.

Aw…Sorry Myaka, I’m not sure why it won’t run. I didn’t add anything in particular that I know of.

Yes DanielQuick, I have heard about Dropbox  I don’t use it often though.

Good job on this, I had a walk through the level and was hoping something wasn’t going to jump on me and scare me!
I think you’ve done a pretty solid job, this being your first project, it reminds me a lot of the office scenes from F.E.A.R, nice use of lighting, textures and ambient sounds.

Good job.

first off i want to say welcome to the fourme
and it is nice to see a other nederlander on this forum
i have played your game and it already looks very good in you got some nice atmosphere

If you set max up properly, you should be able to get light maps out of it that look exactly the same in Unity as they did in the max render.

Wow amazing texture + design! I can help with programming  ( I suck at game design, but like scripting)

Good job!

I’m amazed by the screenshots you got there! Like dreamhead said, good to see other people from the netherlands here

If you want, I can point you some directions to go with scripting. Just PM me ( in dutch, if you want :stuck_out_tongue: )

Wow, thanks guys  I really admire the help. Currently I am starting and working on and off on a new Unity project which will be more cleaner. When I get to the hard parts…I might ask you guys for help :3

Thanks again!
