Let’s make a support thread to help (emotionally and spiritually) Unity devs that has been feeling dejected with the latest announcement. Who have been thinking about abandoning ship, but don’t know which ships to take.
Since everyone already know Godot or Unreal, Here are some lesser known engine that they can research and diversifying their engine choices
To be frank, the vast majority of devs who could make due with any of those engines would not reach the 200k revenue or downloads to be affected by Unity’s monetary change… (especially since that only goes into effect after you have been successful for 12 months which is way past the peak for almost all indie games).
People love to panic
But guess from that viewpoint, a place to vent (and clarify) is a good idea, yeah.
Some people will never get it. Some people will kiss the boot as it’s lowering directly onto their face.
Unity is giving themselves all the resources to determine who the big money earners are and all the tools to take as much money from developers as they wish. Just because you yourself will not be a mover and shaker in the world, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t concern yourself with fostering an open market where the best and brightest are making the top content with the most resources.
It’s so tiring trying to talk common sense stuff with people who don’t see the encroaching madness setting in.
“Just trust the big evil, incompetent corporations, things aren’t going to get worse and worse and worse…”
People don’t read history books, things almost always get worse. Blind faith in the greedy is the death knell of all prosperity.
Once you reach the point that you’re using the engines listed there, you might as well just make your own. At that point you’re just not using Unreal and Godot instead out of spite.
