which music do you look for?

hi!
I wonder which kind of music are you looking for for your games…
I am just wondering about my future music project and i would like to have some developer point of view…
Which are the most useful music you are buying?
Short loops? Full orchestral scores? Angry metal tracks? Funny songs?
I do not know every game published… Are the majority of developers working on small phone-web gameswhich require very simple music? Is it better to focus on this than on big scores?

Any idea on this topic could be useful for us composers and to you… To get the music you want!

It depends entirely on the game. For instance, for my space battle games, I typically look for majestic, orchestral music. However, for a cartoony game, you’d want something more light playful. There are as many styles of music as there are game genres, so its impossible to say what kind you should be focusing on.

Also, while stock music is great for ambiance, when I’m looking to pay for music for my game, I usually have the composer create something specific to the game. This helps me get an iconic feel for my game.

From my experience, the biggest challenges to musicians in games are…

  • Knowing that the tracks generally need to loop.

  • Knowing the aesthetic of the game and what the team wants.

  • Working in sound design goes a lot further then making music. There are sound effect for in-game and out of game sequences that need to be addressed.

  • Knowing that your working in a team and will need to communicating your struggles and issues. It’s very different from simply working solo.

I would concentrate on those elements more then anything else. The style will chance depending on the project, but if you know the basics of working on a game project then you should be good.
