Why every starter wants to make a MMO?

As the title says.
Why everyone that just started making games(or at least wants to make games),wants to make a MMO?
Unity 3D forum, gamedev forum…I’ve seen a lot of posts with ,How do I make a MMO gief me scripts".
I personally think that the lack of knowledge about ,how games are made",makes them ask for this kind of stuff.

What’s on their mind?

They hear that WOW makes lots of money and want to achieve the same thing. (Or they just enjoyed playing WOW for some months but don’t like some things about it).
As every other HL1 Mod tried to copy CounterStrike a decade ago
But I doubt you’re really asking for a real reason. You seem to know the answer or many of them already and just want to pour your heart out
Just think about why you wanted to start developing games.

Everyone wants to have succes.
And I think this doesn’t only happen in the gaming industry…but everywhere.
Every company, every person wants to DO something big…but big stuff, start by small things.
This need for making something big(i’m not talking just about the size),helps! You keep going on,and you never give up,thinking about how big your project will be at the end.

You can’t create something, without having enough knowledge of what you are actually going to create.

Anybody who wants to start with an MMO, or anything moderately complicated for that matter, is demonstrating how little they know about how much there is to know!

People are dreamers. I think everyone should try to make what they want to. They want to mak MMOs because virtual worlds are engrossing, enchanting and the most interesting and complex game system in existence. Sure, it clutters the forum, but it’ll be a sad day when posts like that disappear altogether,

Yes, most people at the beginning of any endeavour are ignorant of a lot of things, but their dream and fascination is what brought them in to game development to begin with. We all “knew little” at some point, whether we tried to make a simple Pong game or actually tried to draw out plans for an MMO.

I think if you take a look at the majority of posts of people, this is untrue. Some people are looking at “ways to make large amounts of cash”, but I think the majority of people wanting their own MMO is because they enjoy playing MMOs and want to be the designers/developers/administrators of a world.

I think people want to make it, because you can dream it. To a certain extent, you can actually achieve it. Unity + SmartFox + your home computer as a server = free virtual world for you and your buddies.

It’s because its what they like and they want to make it their own way. I choose to make an FPS because I like FPS games and haven’t found a game that fit’s my idea of the perfect FPS experiance.

This is not the problem though. The problem is that most people don’t do their research first to see what they are getting themselves into. Also, many people tend to find it easier for themselves to try and get others to help out/do things for them or inform them about how things are done. This is almost paradoxical as anyone who is that lazy to not do their own research first or try things on their own first will definitely not have the drive to complete their idea.

I remember when I wanted to make a mmorpg… I guess I liked the idea of creating a universe that came from my imagination… I liked the idea of a sandbox universe, I learned my lesson soon enough :-p

I got started way back when because I had an idea for an MMO, I didn’t even play MMOs, I just thought they were cool.

Although counterintuitive, I think the reason is MMO’s seem like an easy kind of game to make to newcomers. They have no concept of level streaming/stitching, networking, user databases and such. As far as they know, all they need to do is model a big world and let players walk around in it.

How hard could it be? Right?

That made me laugh!! Thanks!

Like someone mentioned above…many are amazed at the possibilities, dream big, and want to make something magical.

It still amazes me just how frikking hard it is to accomplish this. The problem isn’t our dreams, the tools just aren’t there yet.

I had to laugh at your joke about the problem being the tools, not the dreamers.

yeah, but no matter how advanced the tools get, i dont think i would ever be able to build a skyscraper or a commercial airliner by myself without the help of anyone else… and thats the kind of proportions when a 13-14 kid with no money nor experience wants to make the next WOW…

theres nothing wrong with dreaming, thats what dreams are for, to fantasize.

but if you want to become a dream reality, theres some obligatory point when fantasy meets reality and reality isnt as flexible as fantasy

Not everyone wants to make a MMO it may just appear that way to you. Once they realize the complexity and amount of work the enthusiasm will fade or they are going actually make it happen. I have watched a number of forums die out over the last couple years as those that wanted to make their dream came to the realization of how hard it really is.

Well my reason is i usually am a failure at making games i may be popular IRL but i keep trying to make a game and i like fantasy thats it for me

  1. Multiplayer is awesome. Making a game that is multiplayer means playing with other people-- which transform a game from good to great.

  2. I believe that MMORPG’s are more than just a game. They are a society, a social interface, a real world which people live. You make friends, meet spouses, and create enemies in MMORPG’s. The idea of an MMO is combining real life (Society Social Interaction) with video gaming. Of course it’s popular!

  3. Severely doubtful most indie developers are out to make money. In fact, most MMO developers who are out to make money (and dont have a company or millions from investors) won’t make a very good MMO. I know that making a good game is more important to me than making a game that sells. That doesn’t mean people don’t want to make money, but that a lot here simply want to make a GAME, not a business.

  4. A lot of posters seem to be very young (13-15) and young people have dreams and ideals. Good for them!

  5. People don’t want to spend hours researching for an idea when others can share their knowledge in mere minutes. There is nothing wrong with asking “Can I make a MMO?” because the majority of people who ask that DO NOT LIVE ON THE FORUMS! I can’t stress this enough. Telling someone “Use the search function!” is not an intelligent response, it’s a lazy one. Lazier for YOU (who can’t spare a few minutes) than the person who can’t spare a few HOURS.

  6. People want to make “their version” of their favorite game, which often is a MMO. Unfortunately, every MMORPG game idea I read on here or on kickstarter.com is the most dull, least innovative, boring piece of “Why even make that?” I have ever read.

I mean seriously…if you’re going to go through the trouble of making a game as amazing as an MMORPG…why in the WORLD would you make it a crappier clone of an already successful game model? Talk about failure before you even begin.

Oh and btw, I forgot to mention “Even if you have millions of dollars or are a AAA company, you still probably won’t make a very good MMO”.

Everything seems to be almost identical in model, with only small variations. If indie developers here want to do the same thing AAA titles are doing, but with none of the budget— I suggest them typing /wrist in real life, lol. Jk, but…

Don’t miss out on the most amazing, POWERFUL, aspect of being an INDIE DEVELOPER-- which is simple: you DONT HAVE TO copy the typical MMO. You AREN’T RESTRICTED BY A PUBLISHER! Use this power to your advantage. Create something original. Create something niche. Create something beautiful. CREATE SOMETHING FUN!

Oh, and btw, I am creating an MMO.
Have been for the past year!

i made a cool mmo, just a case of inching an idea and doing it. wasn’t so hard tbh.

Link?

I would LOVE to see what you’ve done, so I can measure my own dream to it.

Where is it, and how long did it take you? :stuck_out_tongue:

It is possible to make a MMO, you just have to have patience and work hard on it, make a small world with little features first and you can do it. Runescape was started by two guys and hosted on a home computer
