Wii U developer's license

i just downloaded unity 5 and there’s no wii u build option. Apparently I’m suppose to contract nintendo or fill out some application to get a license and be able to build for wii u.

Anyone know what are the minimum qualifications to get accepted as a developer for the wii u?

I think an actual office address and previously released games are still the key requirements. And an undisclosed (but not totally ridiculous) upfront cost.

Ooh, they updated the program a lot. Used to be a brick wall guarded by Cerberus, with a troll bridge behind it, leading to a chasm where Cthulhu was crawling up.

these nintendo guys claim that i would have to be an established company.

nintendo makes the process simple in that link, but A lot of people said they get very late/no replies from nintendo after applying. i read that many times already and it doesn’t sound like experience other developers went through.

explain?

You can register as an individual. I have also heard that they aren’t very good at replying to all submissions.

The requirement was as mentioned above, and even then they could reject you (after a very long wait) for not being cool enough. Or so it was rumoured. You needed an office and two released titles on the market for other platforms at one point, and had to buy their development system. Glad to see it’s easier for WiiU. Just wondering what the market is like now

you said in the past, you had to be an official company and must have developed some games and buy their dev kit? so now you don’t need to be a company, have any experience, nor do you have to buy their dev kit?

Exactly. It’s app store style.

Except you have to be accepted as a developer. Anyone can become an iOS/Android developer (assuming that’s what you mean), but without a track record the chances of getting accepted for a console are much lower.

Yes. But anyone can apply

I wouldn’t bother wasting time or money on making anything for nintendo.

Its very easy to register as a developer for the Wii U with Nintendo.

Basically, you should expect to sign up, get a call in about 8 weeks and they will tell you the basics and do a simple interview and likely approve your application. The rest is behind an NDA, but its mostly details. The important stuff is public info.

They explain in the call that you can order a devkit at anytime and port your game to the Wii U with it, if you don’t like it or if you simply prefer, you can just return it within 6 months and no strings attached, otherwise pay for the devkit and publish the game. Thats all I can really say i guess, but the rest isn’t a big deal. I have not ordered the devkit, so I am not really aware of specs and difficulty of use. There are some interviews and postmortems online that discuss that topic a bit more.

how hard is it to use the dev kit? i’m guessing that with the dev kit, it will unlock the wii u build options in unity 3d.

do i have to do any additional code with dev kit or does unity do all the job exporting it?

I applied for their platform. At the time of application I had no company or team or portfolio of previously released games. They rejected me because of my geographical location. I guess, thats because wiiu eshop is not available in my country? Last time I checked, number of eshop enabled country is horribly low. So this issue essentially lower sales number, anticipated. Anyway, right now I can apply through our company but I do not have any hope that they would response in a positive manner. Besides, market share of nintendo is quite low. Why would you develop for wiiu when you can do console deving easily with id@xbox, or ps?

They are not mutually exclusive…

Wii u market is good, if you publish a fun game there is a super high probability of good profit, you just have to look into the demographics and market space.
