willing to learn.

hi guys im absulutely NEW to java and by new i mean i didnt understand the code ive been using untill i found what really makes it work.

if there are biginner or newbie tutorials i will be thankfull and appreciate it.
I prefer newbie tuts coz i dont get much of the free codes i use.
looked for good tuts but the pattern isnt right, i inderstand the first, second then suddenly something ive never seen and dont get even after the tut pops up.

thanks in advance!

im only 13 but creating mini projects for me and whoever is interested has been my dream. ( because devs dont listen to players :stuck_out_tongue: … well not all of them… )

EDIT: when you are a kid you have health and time
grow up and go to work you have money and health
be an old guy and you will only have time ( maybe some health and money :stuck_out_tongue: )

im currently 13 and i have NO money and LITTLE time.
just sayin. im not littelary poor. im saying im not whilling to pay anything. actually cant. because most of the time i see unity users buy from the asset store rather than start out from scratch. this will tell you im looking for free easy and not long tuts. just a heads up :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I like your enthusiasm but there is no free and easy way to do it. There are free ways, but you won’t be writing perfect UnityScript after a week. It’s gonna be hard and here are two tips, well maybe three. First, you won’t be using Java in Unity3d. You’ll be using an edited version of Javascript (Java and JavaScript are much different), called UnityScript. Second, this is a professional forum where adults and people trying to make a living are a part of, so you should try and be as mature as possible. Try not to use to many abbreviations like “coz,” or anything that may be deemed immature or unprofessional. You don’t need to write like you’re typing an essay but it should be nice. Third do your research. I get the idea you are very new to programming and one day said, “I want to make a game.” There is no problem with that but once again, this is a professional (most of the time :)) forum so you should at least have some idea of what you’re talking about. I don’t mean to insult you but I am trying to help you. If you have no background in scripting, leave, now :). But seriously, if you have no background in programming other than blankly starring at code, you should learn some more basic programming before making a game. On top of all of that, look at a lot of code but don’t use it. What I mean by that is, you can teach yourself by seeing what others do but don’t “take,” their code as that will get you nowhere. You should know now that it won’t be easy but in a solid year you could be on your way to starting to write some decent code. To conclude I would suggest either signing up for advanced math classes or learning it on your own. It will make a lot of advance game programming subject make sense. I would suggest learning some algebra, algebra 2/ trig, and geometry. I know this is a laundry list of thing to do before you really even start, but it will make it so much easier and make your abilities greater.

Good Luck,
Bennet

Thank you for your replay, very helpful and i will try to do my best. I have a small backround about scripting and have been trying to learn in the past few months. I have some algebra and math from school ( not advanced but intermediate ) and I can try to put what I’ve learned into action, and when you said that once I was like " I Want To Make A Game " , I didnt say that at first firstly I got into coding and knew that it will be challenging to get basics but after a while I got them .

Thanks for your replay, really helpful and I appreciate it.

Sure, and once again, I don’t mean to sound insulting.

Good Luck,
Bennet

P.S.
I love http://www.codecademy.com/ … It has some great beginner and intermediate JavaScript programming tools.

If you are a complete beginner to programming you need to put away Unity and learn the basics of programming first.

I suggest downloading Visual Studio C# Express (Free) Visual Studio: IDE and Code Editor for Software Developers and Teams

Type “c# for beginners” into google / youtube. And start from there. There are thousands of free tutorials out there.

Don’t touch Unity until you are comfortable with C# which could take weeks months or more depending on how much time you put into learning.

There’s a lot more to designing a game in Unity besides the programming/scripting. I think you should keep digging into Unity and Mono Development as it takes a good amount of time to get all the other stuff down (ie) Creating and organizing your project, model and other art creation, and how to import them. Also what better place to start playing around with script than Unity, where you can see your real-time results, while picking up some other Unity related skills a long the way.

Many new comers to scripting say that jScript has less of a learning curve, and have just as many if not more tutorials available. A few of the free tutorials and this link Here is all you need to get started.

PS @ Pikrat - codecademy (I second the motion)

I think we all start in a different place but telling a presumably complete beginner to start with C# might be a lot. The syntax isn’t the easiest in my opinion (however I know, no matter what, online my opinion is wrong :)), at least for a complete beginner and while it will give him some good habits it’s a bit daunting.

Whatever,
Bennet

Can’t disagree enough with this . What you do with Unity is basically just script different API functions . Learning how to write to a file with C# over and over again is boring and doesn’t have much to do with Unity .

Google Walker Boys Unity, Javascript in unity is really easy to pick up .
