workflow: license moving to other computer

I have the unity installed on my computer. Now I got my new laptop.
In order to move it to the other computer can I use the same serial number?
Will that work? Or do I need to do something special?

You can install on two machines at once with a Unity license. There shouldn’t be any problems.

Is the license linked up to some server that authenticates that it was installed on two machines and then kills further installs?

I ask because what if your hard drive craps out and you have to format and reinstall everything.

When you install you need to be connected to the internet so our licensing code can communicate with our server. Failing that you need to follow the steps for a manual activation by sending us a file generated client-side. This is all done so we limit your license to installation on two unique computers (so hardware-specific data is what is sent or included in that file). If you reformat and reinstall then our system will recognize it as the same hardware as before and allow it. If on the other hand, you change hardware in some significant way (new motherboard) then that may fail and in that case you need to contact us at support@unity3d.com and we’ll help you through it.

Ah ok. I just wasnt sure if it was like a few other software licenses that basically killed absolutely all further installs, no matter what.

I actually do have a question about this topic. Say I installed a Unity pro license on two computes but then I bought a third computer and I don’t want to use one of my older computers, can i remove the license from one of the old ones to use on the newest one?

Yeah, we’ve done similar at the office when upgrading/moving computers around. Send Unity’s support address an email letting them know what you’re doing and include the license key for the install and they’ll grant you an extra install.

In the past they’ve always got back to me within 2 business days, and usually in only 1.

You are allowed 2 installations per serial.

There is Help Menu > Manage License.

  • Activate License
  • Return License

There are two ways. Either you return the license or you can send an email to Unity3D that on so-and-so machine name you re-scrapped the computer and here is the proof (as attachment on email).
