You think you've seen the worst of Kickstarter? Welcome to the Universe Project

@khanstruct … I’d stop while you’re ahead. Your problems are relatively simple to solve, if not requiring some clever thinking.

I assure you, my problems are far from simple to solve. If, however, you’re referring to the technical issues that would be involved in creating a persistent, sandbox MMO that allows players to apparently build anything from scratch, I would love to hear your approach.

Not only are they simple [as in, can be done within a reasonable kickstarted budget without superheros], I note many of them have already been solved - mine-craft, second-life, geo-spacial DB’s etc. all provide valuable starting points.

I think about it often, any particular issues you’d like to dig into?

Please note were it said that in the video? IIRC it only claims that you can make weapons, and ummm boats?.. nothing about from scratch.

I think they are just making it seem allot better then it will actually be.

You should do it then, a game that is a flawless virtual universe (remembering limits) would be one of the greatest games ever made, letting people just go for it is one of the best things about MineCraft things like pistons let for a great environment the only thing that is missing is the ability to program what you want, like having computers in games is a big step.

While I could be talked into working on such a project, given sufficient resources vision, it’s not something I’ve much interest in pursuing myself. Of course, that could be a massive mistake but c’est la vie.

If you had a budget of 100 million , and the scale of the world was actually that of a small city, with power , water , ect being provided , then it might be possible to make something here .

But noooo, this is the Universe project, once they really get started you’ll be able to travel to other worlds !

We have no idea what this actually is though , It might be a text adventure MMO .

Sure, or you could drop a few zero’s off of that budget and still meet the goals outlined in vid.

So… you really didn’t think the above quote through did you? Unless you think a text based MMO needs $100Mn?

I saw as a comment on there youtube vid(by them) that it will be isometric but then eventually become first person.

I don’t think this game is impossible to make in the sense the description is too wide and ambiguous. Realistically speaking, it’ll never be completed, because it aims at “absolute reality” in the form of a video-game, and in theory you can always work and expand a game like that… but it can reach a playable state before it’s completed, like minecraft.

Honestly, though… even if you don’t know how much it takes to make a game of such caliber, you can look at other games like WoW and such, and extrapolate, and also take into account it’s an indie game… presented with doodles, so there’s more than enough reason to doubt this.

Its implied this is going to be a WOW type MMO , to get that on the massive scale they want would cost 100Mn .

Now an indie team could pull this off if it ends up being a text adventure MMO .

MMO and low budget shouldn’t be in the same sentience

That was my first thought. "When did Peter Molyneux rename his Populous Kickstarter?

The problem I have with the video and any other game like this that claims the same kind of “game play” is how they portray YOU.

They show someone on a peak, waving a sword in the air, overlooking a large crowd of other players. That isn’t YOU with the sword by the way. You’re a tiny little speck at the back asking “So what’s going on?” three seconds before you are gang-raped by a bunch of griefers who are “making up their own game play.”

They show a town with a sign board “My town” and then a player on a throne with a rod of power. Which is awesome. One day YOU will wander in to this deserted, empty ghost town and hear a faint voice coming from a tumble down shack with three walls and no roof and no working plumbing because the guy who built it got bored. The voice will be saying, commandingly and imperiously, “I told you to guard this entrance without question. Now I shall have to punish you! Guards! Take him prisoner and execute him immediately! But do it slowly!” and when you finally track down the source of the voice you will find another player, the only other player you have met in seventeen days of traveling across a high desert, scrabbling on all fours, holding a magnifying glass and attempting to set light to a bottle cap that is surrounded by the corpses of dead roaches. That player, upon hearing your approach will rush over to you, grab you by the lapels and immediately try and get you to start building the horse stables because…

every fucker wants to be king and no fucker ever wants to do the work.

“When I speak to potential authors and game developers there is one theme that repeats endlessly: They want to have written, they just don’t want to actually write.”

I say we write a script that will just funnel the collaboration forum straight in to the game world. You will have lots of players claiming to be a CEO and a project manager asking for five hundred people to build them a small city where they can be king.

Haha, thats a good one : D

Large seamless world, you do what you want, invent your own game style/play, parallel universe, devoid of existing infrastructure, build the world, one character only…

TBH this sounds NOTHING like a WOW type game.

…he meant it technically, so not a text adventure, not a 2d game, but a 3d game with avatars, effects and such

There are huge and fundamental differences between the two, particularly in terms of how much content needs to be provided. While the scope of this game may be significantly larger, the content needed is comparatively small and could be largely handled by a small team of hardcore programmers.

You could spend huge sums of money on art - but it is by no means required to achieve the basic goals outlined or be commercially successful.

still, he meant it technically, so not a text adventure, not a 2d game, but a 3d game with avatars, effects and such

No, he specifically said a ‘Its implied this is going to be a WOW type MMO , to get that on the massive scale they want would cost 100Mn.’

A ‘3d game with avatars, effects and such’ does not necessitate a $100Mn budget.

Anyways, we aren’t talking about a text game or a 2d game then, but a 3d one.

On the other side, I think from a design perspective that this game is a nonsense. On a huge world, no one will find anyone else. If there are no NPC-s, then it means there won’t be guards, merchants, questgivers, because those activities are unfun for the majority of the players. If there are no rules, the whole game will degenerate into a gankfest (as it happened with Mortal Online and Darkfall). For every “town ruler” there will be 100 players who are NOT town rulers. Etc.

I think this is a huge scam to rip off a lot of people through Kickstarter. They want to grab some millions, and never deliver anything.

Or some joke / mediahack.

Ok, if they claim its going to be isometric, then what the crap are those gameplay vids in the promo video? They used videos from other games to promote this pile?

Also, no, they did not specifically say that you could make anything from scratch. They simply said you could create your own town, build an army, build a boat and build a farm. I was simply assuming that this was not an exhaustive list of the things you can do in a parallel universe.

If all you can do is build a boat, a house or a sword… then yes, its possible… and even more lame.

lost me when he thought it was OK to use footage from world of warcraft using his own gimpy character.
