99 Waves to Die - Retro Twin Stick Shooter

Just gearing up for release of my first iOS/Android/Ouya game, set for release October, 2013. Also planning to port to WP8 Windows 8 Store, with pre-windows 8 version via website, before the end of the year. Thought I’d get some feedback from fellow Unity developers

The game itself is a 8-bit/80’s arcade inspired twin stick shooter. The aim is to create a game with the look/feel of that era’s arcade/home computer games, with insane difficulty levels, and addictive gameplay.

Gameplay videos :

Development has been done in Unity Free (just moved to 4.2.1), NGUI for gui, artwork/modelling done in a combination of Paint.NET, Qubicle Constructor Blender.

More details on my website. Any comment/suggestions?

i love it reminds me of that hidden game in PGR .geometry wars
a few suggestions:
bullets should be more visible maybe thicker
enemies and player have trails makes the game look alot nicer
smooth out the character controller so it doesnt snap to rotation tween it. it would make such a difference

anyways it looks great i love the title screen  good luck!

thanks for the suggestions. Bullet size is a good one, on earlier builds the camera was a little closer in but now it’s zoomed out a little bullet size may need tweaking, not thought about it tbh I’ve been staring at this for 3 months so I’m getting a little boss-eyed with it

Control is actually designed to snap to the rotation, because on later waves if it was smoothed (even a little) that delay could be the difference between life and death. I did originally have a little bit of smoothing/physics in there for the player rotation and it didn’t feel responsive enough.

As for the trails, interesting idea, not sure on how to implement it though, I might have a play with it once I’ve got the main game finished. To be honest there are a number of effects I’d like to put in that will make it look a lot nicer, but I don’t want to go too far because I want to keep the 8-bit/80’s aesthetic.

One thing I would really like to do is a glow/bloom effect on everything (similar to a game called RadiantHD ) as I think that gives it a look as though it’s being played on an old, dirty, cig stained arcade cabinet CRT display, but that would need Unity Pro, and I can’t afford the upgrade :frowning:

I like it. Reminds me of when I was a kid and would go to pizza hut and play their old school games like this or the ones with the planes. My only problem with it is the barrier. When I first saw it, it absolutely made me want to scream my eyes due to the color and brightness. But then I am using a super nice monitor that enhances colors, and after a few minutes I stopped looking at it and instead at where you were moving and shooting. lol

Actually I do see one other potential problem. I couple of times it looked like the enemy spawned kinda close and started moving at you before you even started moving yourself. That could end up angering some of your players. But all in all, I personally like it! Great work! :3

Thanks for the feedback

The spawning system is actually what I’m working on now. All the fundamentals of the game are complete, and the final crunch is now starting to get all 99 waves implemented, which is basically working out how many enemies, where they spawn, how many you’ve got to kill, which ones drop power-ups etc. for each wave, so that part of the game is very much ‘in flux’ at the moment.

I’m being very encouraged by peoples feedback though, and not just here. Everyone who has seen the game-play videos, or guys I’ve had playing the early builds, really seem to like it, and ‘get’ the retro concept and what I’m trying to do. Except of course the non-english commentator on my youtube video, but as I can’t speak/read what I think is Russian, I’ll assume that they also like it

for the gritty crt effect you could always do a simple camera filter im sure you can find a mask image place it on a plane and stick it in front of the cam

thanks jameos, good idea, I’ll have a look into that

Finally got the last bunch of waves/testing done, and the game is now available on Google Play Store:

I’ve submitted it to Apple, but still waiting approval.
