A notice for Asset Store assets from publishers in Greater China

unreal win. unity dead

Because of updated regional licensing, distribution, and compliance requirements

Businesses are forced to comply to regulations or face hefty fines. It’s not a decision Unity made.

Guys this is insane !! You guys didn’t even let us change our location before applying this decision. I studied in HongKong many years ago, started game dev and making asset back in the time. Bro I am not there anymore !! And I got an email saying all my asset is gonna be taken down from the asset store. :frowning:

For those who can’t read Chinese like me, we don’t even know there is a chinese version of Unity, that is something inside the “wall”.

I know I didn’t create really good asset before, But I have a new awesome asset - VFX Grass launching on March. I have already summited a support ticket. For those who are using my asset from LKHGames , I’m so sorry for the inconvenience if anything happen. May have to move to itch.io or own website.

Dear Unity you should let develop to choose what to use instead of forcing us to it. People would just download and use the chinese one if they want, I don’t see the point of making this decision.

yep~~~~~~~~~~~````````````

regional compliance cannot cause so much impact, Epic is still doing great without any trouble, they even have close cooperation with local government, why is only unity in such mess

Will Chinese payment methods be restricted in any way by the global site? In other words, are you going to actively prevent both publishers and customers from interacting with the global Asset Store, or is it just about the publishers?

Seems likely, time to say good bye to Unity Asset Store.
I have no choice, but now submitting Unity package to Unreal Fab store.

If it works, all my Unity plugins will be hosted on Unreal Fab soon.

You have to manually submit requests for refunds ?
Plus they don’t tell you clearly which assets you own are impacted.
This really feels like they want to avoid mass refunds…
I live in Europe and am sad to see that “Global == US”.

So the current situation is:
If you’re located in China(including Hong Kong, China, and Macau, excluding Taiwan, China): after March 31 your assets will no longer be accessible through the international Unity Asset Store. You may be able to link those international assets to the China store so they appear there, but if the China store does not carry a given asset you will not be able to obtain it via the store. Licenses are likely to be lost as well.

If you’re an international user: assets that include the China region will be frozen after March 31. You’ll still be able to download them, but they won’t receive further updates. In some cases it may be possible to associate your international assets with the China store to get future updates (and have the license governed by the China store), but I haven’t seen clear examples of this working reliably — some users who tried to sync reported that orders didn’t show up afterward.

Attached are two emails I received from different regions (I don’t know why I received two emails)

I will leave this here for anyone who is interested:

It would be beneficial if someone from Unity used this as a foundation to create an official tool that verifies ownership of removed assets using package IDs rather than relying on publisher name string comparisons, which are highly unreliable. (not to mention the heavy use of reflection, which is even less reliable).

We strongly oppose the fragmentation of the ecosystem. I’ve purchased a large amount of resources from Unity, and I need updates and support from subsequent authors. Your actions are despicable. Users should have the freedom to choose. Also, why isn’t Taiwan included? What are you doing?I am unable to download more than 2063 assets. This is deceiving consumers. You cannot arbitrarily change the regulations. I strongly oppose this.

This is totally unacceptable. I’ve been purchasing assets from the Unity Asset Store for nearly 10 years, and suddenly we’re being told that we are losing access to them. There was no meaningful advance notice, just a very short window of about half a month to one month to deal with a situation that directly affects years of purchases and established workflows.

The situation is also handled very differently across regions. Users outside Greater China are allowed to continue downloading assets and are given a 6-month refund window. Meanwhile, users in Greater China are simply told to download everything they’ve purchased within a limited timeframe before losing access.

I’m very curious about the reasoning behind restricting publishers by region. Publishing on the China Asset Store and the global Asset Store should not be mutually exclusive. Publishers should be able to decide where they distribute their assets, whether in one store or both, instead of being blocked from one side entirely.

The logic of “because you’re from China, you’re not allowed to sell assets in the global store” feels very strange. I don’t sell assets though, I haven’t seen this kind of restriction in other game or app marketplaces. Usually content may be restricted, but not the publisher as a whole. Meanwhile I can see some popular global assets are available in the China Asset Store. Why doesn’t it work the other way around?

This move will hurt a large number of small developers and hobbyists. It goes directly against what many of us believed Unity Technologies stood for, an open and accessible ecosystem that empowers creators of all sizes.

It also raises further concerns. Will there be even more restrictive measures in the future? For example, could users in Greater China eventually be restricted from logging into the global Unity Hub?

Developers in China are being pushed toward the Tuanjie Engine, which currently lacks support for many features that are only available in Unity 6. This is especially critical for developers working on major XR platforms like Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro. For many developers, this makes it simply not a viable alternative unless they implement workarounds to fill these missing features. Developers should be allowed to use either one, or both, according to their needs, rather than being forced to stick to one side.

Why are developers in China and international developers being treated differently?

International developers can still access and use their purchased plugins after March 31, although they will no longer receive updates. However, developers in Mainland China appear to lose access to the international store entirely.

This raises the question: isn’t this a double standard?

If the issue is purely related to regulatory compliance in China, then restricting updates and new purchases would seem sufficient. Why completely block access to the store for Chinese developers, instead of allowing continued access to previously purchased assets under a “no updates, no new purchases” model?

As it stands, Chinese developers are effectively required to download all their assets locally before the cutoff date, which creates unnecessary operational risk and uncertainty.

所以请对开发者和购买者作出合理赔偿,否则变相将自已的成风险转介给我们了

Totally agree, they’ve been taking 30% revenue from publisher very long time.
They should refund the taken 30% revenue to all publisher(the removal list) in the past 6~12months, as this less than one month notice is unacceptable!

The change is because of regional licensing, distribution, and compliance, factors outside of our control unfortunately. You can still access and use the assets you have bought past the deadline, but you wont be able to purchase from that developer after the 31st.

It’s not ideal no, we can bring this back to the team to see if we can do anything to smooth the process.

This is a permanent change because of regional licensing, compliance and distribution, users in that region will only have access to the China Asset Store

I had to check and make sure you weren’t on the list!

We just shipped a new "Download all’ feature so you can get all of your assets at once to keep, but please do this before the 31st as you will lose access after.
