Adjust lighting for distant objects

I wish to create an environment at night that will display objects that are further away with less light. Such objects ideally would fade to black rather than a grey that would be more suitable for daylight or even mist. My skybox is very dark and silouettes would appear more realistic for such a scene.

Can this be done?

Why don’t you just use distance fog, with a very dark colour? This will have a similar effect, and if you blend it well with your skybox could work quite nicely. This isn’t modifying the lighting, as such, rather modifying the final resultant colour.
