Block Shaders: Surface Shaders for SRPs and more (Public Demo Now Available!)

Greetings from the Shader team. As already indicated by some posters in this thread who attended Unite, we would like to officially confirm that Block Shader development is now put on hold. We will not proceed with Shader Foundry/Block Shader feature development in the near future, and will prioritize delivering more incremental improvements to Unity’s shader system throughout the coming 6.x releases.

Our major focus moving forward is around the modernization of Unity’s shader compilation pipeline, ensuring we can reliably support the latest shading and HLSL features across all platforms. This also includes a big focus on shader variant compilation speed and PSO caching improvements, with the goal of reducing project iteration times. Lastly, we will also introduce new improvements to Shader Graph and text based shader customization, albeit with means other than Block Shaders.

We want to thank everyone in this thread for the great feedback and suggestions. Our team reviewed your input, and we will do our best to make sure your shader authoring challenges and needs are met. This thread will now be closed, but please stay tuned for more news and updates coming soon.
