I can’t use:
Anim8or (I’m on windows 7 so it won’t load, it was designed for 98 and XP)
Blender (Really struggling on remembering the stuff for this one)
Cinema 4D (same as above)
Simple and good?
Well, in the 3d world there is nothing really simple. Each 3d software needs time to master.
But if money doesn’t matter I would go with Modo. Compared to other 3d software it is quite easy to use.
Forget Cinema4d. That is crap these days. Only good for motion design.
That is still way cheaper than 3ds Max, Maya, Houdini, or C4D. And with the newest version 601, you get a pretty powerful 3d suite.
I know you wrote that Blender is not the way to go for you. But it is really powerful these days and free. It has a step learning curve. No doubt. But if you get used to it it is really intuitive and efficient.
I thought about Modo, but unity doesn’t support the bones http://unity3d.com/unity/editor/importing and you have to export to fbx rather than be able to update within Unity - like you can Max, Maya and C4D.
For modelling, Silo is an excellent tool, by far my favourite when it comes to modelling the mesh. Although I don’t actually own this myself and plan on getting it when I have the spare cash. An alternative to Silo is Hexagon 2, which I’ve been using for a while now and the bonus is…it’s currently going for free on their website, so be sure to grab it before the time runs out. I think Silo vs Hexagon, Silo definitely comes out on top.
For the rest, I am sorry to hear Cinema 4D isn’t working out for you, its always been on my list for a dream toolset. I’ve played with it and thought it was awesome.
However, Carrara 8 is reasonably priced. I use Carrara 5 Pro, which is outdated now and I’ve found it great to work with and simple enough to get the hang of and there’s tutorials out there for it. And it exports to .FBX and should run fine in Unity3D, though I’ve yet to try an animated mesh yet myself, but Unity’s Asset page says it works fine.
RobinS, can you have a scene in Unity with Modo models and you decide you want to update that model. Can you save it in Modo and will it automaticallly update in Unity? That is a huge timesaver.
Can you paint on your model in Modo and export it for usage in Unity? Or is that just for modo rendering?
I think you can, i use export as FBX for animated characters… works great so far!.
You can also paint and render to texture directly in modo.
But i would suggest to check out the demo version first.
Having been a professional 3d modeler for almost 10 years I can only recommend 2 applications for serious polygon modeling. 3DSmax and Sofitmage XSI. Each has their own advantages.
3DSmax has a huge array of polygon modeling tool and is very easy to learn. Picking it up shouldn’t take more then a few days. Pick up a gnomon DVD or dig into one of the thousands of tutorials available online.
XSI is probably a bit more powerful, but its a bit more difficult to pick up. This is due to the fact that XSI requires you to memorize a large amount of hot keys to operate it. A lot of tools are only accessible via hotkeys. However so of the most talented modelers I know swear by it.
The only real down side to either modeler is their large price tag. Though inexpensive versions can be acquired in numerous ways.
Look on Novedge for prices. It’s slightly cheaper there. I got a good deal on Maya there and saved several hundred bucks.
Luxology also has a crossgrade promotion through the end of next week. If you do have a license for another major 3d program, you can get Modo for $795. I know that likely doesn’t apply to you, but worth mentioning for anyone else,
Or you could head over to Daz3D.com and grab hexagon 2.5 which if free as it’s currently on Promotion. Hexagon is a beauty to work with but is only a modeller, you can’t rig your character and animate him etc. I would recommend to you Carrara 8 Pro, also from Daz3D, but lately I’m getting fedup with it as it has some stability issues and more bugs than an Ant Farm.
If you did get Hexagon you could also grab, search for it, a copy of CharacterFX to rig your model and animate it or, some people from the low cost land swear by this one, Purchase a copy of Milkshape3D. Another option for rigging and animating, again low cost, is FragMotion, it’s pretty nifty.
Going back to modellers, another beauty is Silo2. Very capable and has a Maya/3DSMax way of doing things but if it wasn’t for hexagon being so good I would use Silo2.
Texture Creation: There’s free apps; Gimp for painting your 2D UVMaps or Paint.net. UVMapping, again the low cost solution crowd swear by this one as do I, UltimateUnwrap 3D Pro.
Basically for under $180 you can by yourself very capable apps that do it all and you don’t need to spend thousands on big name 3D Solutions and have to deal with their Draconian Activations and EULA’s…Don’t even get me started.
