Modo and Unity

Hi, anyone using the program Modo http://www.luxology.com/modo/ for modeling? I would lite to switch from 3ds Max, because is very expensive compared to Modo. I’ve been using 3ds for some time, some things to me there seem outdated, like Unwrap. Is Modo good with Unity? Does anyone have a tip which program should be better?

I have seen people using Modo and Unity. Check out Quickfingers’s game. I remember one of his game he shows a video and he was using modo in it. Personally i think for basic modeling. Modo should be okay. Though i have no experience in Modo but i do used Max and maya before. School licenses. but i think the latter is more powerful for animation and other stuff but basic models anything will do. And this depends oso very much on which makes you more comfortable.

I personally use modo for all my modelling (although, my day job also has me using 3ds Max). The speed at which i can model in modo, compared to Max, is not even comparable - it is amazingly fast. Also, for sculpting and painting textures modo is the winner for me. The Animation side is still lacking a bit. Ultimately for me, modelling in modo is a nice experience which is not something I can say about Max. I haven’t used Maya so I cannot comment on that.

Matt.

If you want a good poly or subd modeller then Silo or Modo are good choices. Maya, Max, C4D etc can offer a lot more but if your main goal is to model than why spend money on features you will never use.

I’ve been using 3dsmax since it was called 3D Studio R4 but I’m thinking it’s time to move to a Mac-based, modeling-centric 3D tool.

It sounds like Modo and Silo are both good candidates.

Anyone have any opinion as to which is easier for a long-long-time Max user to assimilate?

I think that is probably down to personal taste. I suggest downloading both and play with the demos for as long as you can. I gave Modo some serious time and thinking but in the end I just couldn’t get really warm with it. Modo sometimes seems to make things more complicated for the sake of “looking cool”. At least that is my impression. Silo on the other hand is no fuzz straight forward and I love that about Silo. Keyboard shortcuts in Silo are also easy to pick up. Silo doesn’t export as FBX but does OBJ (which you can import into Unity with no problems) but since you can’t animate/rig anything in Silo anyways there is no need for FBX. Those are just a few things that come right to mind.

Thanks, TP!

Sounds good. I’m downloading both right now.

I do like that Modo has painting integrated but also love that Silo seems to be all about modeling. I can’t remember the last time I needed to create a keyframe in a 3D editor.

what about cheetah 3d for mac or the almighty blender…

I’ve used Blender and C4D off and on over the years (even own a C4D/BP license) but Modo and Silo look a bit more modern and new.

I own Maya too but I have this habit of completely forgetting how to use Maya whenever I spend more than a week away from it.

Cheetah has always seemed intriguing and as soon as the new version comes out, I think I’ll give it a try too.

Am not a modellor here but yes i do agree what you guys said. Each tools have it’s own power and Maya/Max IMO is like driving ferrari. It is fast but hard to handle as well and pricing isn’t cheap. I heard Cinema4D is not bad too. Other than that. Not too sure then.
