Can't add custom tags

Hello,

I’ve recently started using Unity so please forgive my lack of knowledge.

I’m trying to add custom tags into Unity, but after I add them the don’t appear in the drop down in the Inspector Pane.

As far as I’m aware, to add a new Tag you have to…

Edit > Project Settings > Tags > User Layer ‘x’ (‘x’ being one of those layers)

I add my custom Tag, but when I go to the Tag drop down to select it, it’s not there. It is however, in the Layers Dropdown. This makes sense as I’m adding Layers rather than tags. It says ‘User Layers’ when I want to add a tag.

So how do I add a Tag? I’ve followed the Unity Reference and looked for Answers on here but I can’t find a suitable answer. In fact the reference guide tells me to do exactly what I am doing, but it doesn’t seem to work.

I’m running Unity Version 3.4.1f5… does anyone have this version and if so, do you have the same problem?

I’m sure it’s just me being an idiot and missing something very obvious.

The tags are at the top of the list, where it says “tags” (collapsed by default, it’s a resizable array), the layers are below.

As you said, you’re adding custom layers. Look above the layers and you’ll find the tags section. :slight_smile:

it’s a poor UI thing with unity.
Both ‘add tag’ and ‘add layer’ use the same drop down. The tags are at the top. Untwist the twisty. Elements is confusing, but change that number to how ever many new tags you need. They will automagically appear there and then. Name them. Voila. Done.
