Had enough with the slender titles?

Recently I’ve noticed a large number of work in progress horror “games” (Slender) flooding the works in progress thread. Now im not sure how the other community developers (that take things a little more seriously) are dealing with this but i believe its becoming a little bit out of hand and destroying real content that serious developers are trying to present. I’m just curious wether or not moderators are going to take some kind of action, or am i just being an obnoxious pig. What are your thoughts on these ridiculous (opinion) titles.

These are just a few Slender titles on the first couple of pages (works in progress thread).
All in all i find these posts a waste of time, usually posted by new developers that are spamming the threads. Apologies for getting that off my chest, but then again, this is gossip.

Bleh I don’t think it’s a big deal. Who knows, maybe slenderman was just a stepping stone and one of those developers is going to make something better. Maybe I’m too optimistic.

I think everyone just needs to get over it… TBH this post is more of a wast of space then any slender game.

I just don’t get the Slender thing. I played the original for about 15 minutes… I found a couple of pages in a pretty crappy environment and then the dude appeared and I died…

Not sure why so many people are trying to copy a game that seemed kind of crappy in the first place.

Maybe I’m missing something.

I’ll be honest. I hate Slender, actual heritage behind the story is quite fascinating any talk of Aliens gets me going. But the games are so damn boring. Walk around in the dark, in the woods, with a flashlight, woohoo, 30 seconds went bye and I already counted 30 sheep. The heritage is interesting, the game is not. None of them have entertained me. Point of a game is to have fun, not fall asleep.

Then I realised how much better and more creative I was then most of the slender ripoff people.

To be honest, Slender games, like Zombie and MMO games before them (of course, this again has its exceptions), show a culmination of wasted time and effort that could have been used to make an developer really stand out in the crowd. And it makes me sad.

Apparently a popular youtuber (millions of subscribers) did post a video playing the game and claiming all the time it is one of the scariest experiences of his life (such a boring life isn’t it?!)…
Than the whole slender shit began all over internet. These threads should just be ignored.

I don’t think you are missing anything… there is nothing of any real value to the whole thing. At first I thought it was like Three Moon Wolf shirt where everyone was saying it was good or scary or whatever in irony. But now I think it is just being driven by easily excitable people with no imagination and a lot of free time.

They aren’t scary or any good for that matter (the games or videos). The games don’t even really qualify as games, in fact, they are more like making a game, but leaving out all the hard parts. More of an interactive toy than anything.

And the “myth” is a non-starter as well. No story, not backstory, basically the “boogey” man. Tall quite skinny guy who takes children. There is not one thing or even the combination of things that make “slender” even remotely original. It was neat idea in the original chop contest, but just way out of hand.

They only thing I can figure is that it is mildly amusing to watch someone play not knowing what is going to happen, but the “stare and see ghost” .gifs have been around forever with the same result. (though most of the “reaction videos” are videos of complete idiots.) And they other element of popularity I figure comes from the fact that with minimal skills you can easily create a slender game in a couple of hours. Something that someone can show their friends and say “I made this!” and makes them feel all special.

I feel sorry for AgentParsec. He had the original viral slender doing well… then all these people came along and made clones of it… and I think his upgraded version is still in development.

though with “Slender” there is no heritage… at all. It is nothing more than an internet meme riffing of about a thousand pre-existing legends/fables/stories. All with much more interesting histories. Slender is popular because it is popular, not because it has any intrinsic value. Like Kim Kardashian.

The lesson here is that if you have some of interest, regardless of low quality, wrap it up and sell it at the app store. Otherwise someone else will.

Its called a cargo cult mentality basically its when a a person or a group of people see something successful and try to achieve that success themselves by copying the characteristics of something rather than the actual reason behind why something is successful.

Its like how when the ipod and iphone came out all the other phone and mp3 makers copied the characteristics of the the apple devices to achieve the same success with there products but didn’t get that its not how they look but how they operate and all the professional polish and research and development that is behind the success of apples devices something that was lost to apples competitors who simply thought that if it simply looked like an apple product it would sell like one.

In this case the character of slender is been focused on has been copied rather than the fact that the game its self is the reason behind its popularity. You could replace the slender character with a little girl or a toaster and it would still be as scarey.

Whats interesting is that the original maker of the game slender might not be able to reproduce its original popularity. He has teamed up with a professional team to make slender into a professional game with high definition locations but it was its low definition locations and simplistic graphics that was one of the many reasons it was so scary there is nothing to focus on other than finding the pages and avoiding slender making everything pretty could distract from that BUT I could be wrong and it could turn out to be even scarier its impossible to know how something will turn out till you try it and even then its all down to luck that you have all the right elements in place, another low graphical game that is slightly made differently might not be as scary and as such not get the attention that slender got as it got a lot of things just right.

So basically if your going to try and copy a successful game go ahead but try and find out why it is successful rather than to simply imitate it, that never works.
