Map Creator

Back in the good old days, I did some work with Blitz3D and a fantastic little program called Maplet which allowed you to easily create interior building meshes:

Does anyone know of any “modern day” applications along these lines - preferably for Mac?

Maplet still works fine, but it can only export Blitz3D native format and .x format.

This is my favorite map editor http://www.leadwerks.com/werkspace/index.php?/page/3DWorldStudi:eyes:verview. Although I use Modo for most of my stuff now, if I was making an FPS game I would use 3DWS in a heartbeat for it. I could create old school levels in 3DWS 10 times faster than I could in Modo or Maya. Give it a try, unfortunately it is PC only though. You could also buy it here if you prefer TheGameCreators - TheGameCreators

Also, if you ever need to convert your blitz or .x files you can use this program Ultimate Unwrap 3D - UV Mapping Software, it is amazing for this sort of thing. It is also PC only tho :frowning:

I was just looking at 3D World Studio when you replied

It looks really nice, but again - no useful export formats.

I’ve just been trying a few conversion programs to take Maplet’s B3D or X files and convert them to 3DS. Have tried a bunch of different options and no matter what I do I just get an “invisible” object when I bring the file into Unity.

I’ll try Ultimate Unwrap and see what happens. Hopefully the demo version is fully functional for exporting.

I’m working on an RPG (of sorts) and need to create some very large “dungeons” with uniform grid sizing. Maplet would be perfect… :frowning:

Might have to just model it all manually.

Well I know for a fact that 3DWS in conjunction with Ultimate Unwrap works great with Unity. Just export out of 3DWS in .b3d or .x and then convert that into .fbx in Ultimate Unwrap. Just remember that any program has useful export formats as long as you have Ultimate Unwrap

Looks really good. I can get the Maplet B3D files into Ultimate Unwrap and they look perfect!

Can’t test saving in the demo to get them into Unity, but I might just throw $60 at it and see how it goes.

Thanks for the help!

you can’t go wrong with UU3D, it worth the investment…you wont care about your 3D app F*** you with import / export anymore… in case you get trouble >> UU3D will save you

fully agree, UU3D is a top class app to work with input from X, output for Y scenarios.
Especially mid range modelling applications often have their own interpretations for standards that get you in ugly trouble (Carraras Collada output as an example for worst case)
