Mixamo Animation Store - Official Unity Plugin!

Mixamo Inc. today announced the integration of Mixamo’s online animation service within the Unity Asset Store digital content marketplace. Mixamo’s ever-expanding repository of animation is now accessible to developers immediately in the Unity development platform via a free plug-in, providing an in-editor means to browse, procedurally customise and purchase character animation.

Download and start animating your characters right now!

“With Mixamo’s service integrated into the Unity Asset Store, game designers can get their characters animated incredibly quickly and without access to specialist animators,” said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies. “It’s a real shift in the whole process – developers are getting custom character animation at a dramatically lower price than conventional means, and they don’t have to wait. In so boldly democratizing creation Mixamo feels like family.”

“We want to make the process of creating animations for game characters as simple and quick as possible while still giving to the developers freedom and interactivity,” said Mixamo Co-founder and CEO, Stefano Corazza, “The unprecedented extendibility of the Unity editor allowed us to convert what is usually a long process into a real-time fun experience.”

For the initial release, animations can be purchased at a promotional price in Unity .anim format, while the full FBX is always available on the mixamo.com website. The next level of seamlessly integrated game development is just a few clicks away.

Let us know what you think. We are going to bring constant updates to the plugin in order to make it better. We also take requests for motions and update the motions regularly!

This is needless to say … incredible.

What are the requirements of a model to be animated automatically though? This seems a bit magical… is there any pre-prep that has to be performed on a model to make it Mixamo ready?

Edit: Just played with the extension. I must say that is something else. Great job. I previewed a lot of anims on the Protopack biped… very useful  For anyone who’s interested, you must “retarget” your model via the Mixamo site first (very quick process).

I do have an additional question though, animations that are purchased… are they only good for a single use? single project? Or can you use them across projects?

Nice!

BTW, please add quadruped mapping tool - you already have few animations in your database.

Fabulous !!!
It’s very clever to be able to insert the animations directly into Unity (instead of going on an external website, searching for an animation, trying and seeing it is not exactly what I wanted).
Here I can see the result in my favorite 3D program and give the right parameters to MY character (knee height and so on…).
Thanks Mixamo.
(Now I’m waiting for the answers to the interesting questions of DavidB…)

6R

wow , works great with all 3d models… I hope you can hold the prices cheap.

thanks mixamo!

I purchased some animations already but haven’t applied them yet, does it keep track of what you already purchased?

@DavidB Once you buy it is completely royalties free. You can use it as many times as you want. The only thing you can’t do is package them up and resell them as your own. For example in the asset store. But you can put them into as many games as you want and use them across as many characters you have that share the same skeleton.

@Thetal Quadruped retargeting is much more complicated. We’re looking into it.

@Gaspedal Our prices are sure to hold. We are able to discount the animation so much because we are dealing with Unity’s proprietary animation format *.anim.

@ddesmond yes it keeps track for the animations you’ve downloaded same as any other package you buy on the asset store.

Sorry to be so pedantic, but just to clarify…
If I buy an idle animation, can I apply that animation to any character I own or develop? I’m currently under the impression that I have to buy the animation once per character, each time I want to use it. This would add up very quickly.
If I’m wrong, you’ve got an instant client.

Sorry for the delay Clamps, I was under the impression the forum would e-mail me on reply. So much for that…

The animation is applied once to a single skeleton. If you use that skeleton across multiple character then the idle will work for all character’s sharing a skeleton.

We can’t offer a one time purchase with infinite retargeting simply because of cost and bandwidth on our end.

Cheers,

Most hosting supplies infinite bandwidth, so that’s strange. Wonder what the real reason is.

I bet it’s to make “more money” but they don’t realize they’d make more money (sales) if they allowed us to own the animation across multiple characters.
So strange when people lose a large amount of customers over making a few extra dollars on the ones they have. I guarantee there are more lost customers because of this than the amount of current customers who repurchase identical animations, and the former pay more money…lol…
If you could retarget the same animation across infinite number of characters, I’d probably purchase the entire store. Instead… nope! Not a single one for me.

Also, I have sent emails to Mixamo TWICE so far with inquiry to custom animation work like their website says they do, but both times never received even a basic reply. The first? It’s been months. The second? It’s been weeks. Whoever checks the mail to reply to inquiries about additional animations or custom work is not doing their job. My question was VERY SIMPLE, “How much would it cost for you to make a two-handed mining animation?” You know…as I might be willing to pay extra to see it hit the website sooner than later.
After a few weeks of no responses, I went to the forums and asked the question, as whoever works there responds VERY fast and is VERY informative. Emails? No. If you have a question, go to their forums.

It is simply amazing how much money and so many customers some companies lose by trying to squeeze that extra penny out of their current ones, or by just simply ignoring the emails.

I remember when Torque3D just released with a partnership with a 3D modeling company, I made an inquiry to that company to invest up to $10,000, and the person replied aggressively because they didn’t understand what I was asking. Yet… my email was EXTREMELY detailed and specific. I was extremely patient with him, replying immediately to every email, while making sure my questions were very simple to understand in addition to detail. I was very professional and utterly serious in my emails, but after a few emails back and forth he failed to understand the simple question (I literally asked in one email “What is the average price for a mesh of [attached] quality?” that exact sentence) and he must have got frustrated because he told me that he didn’t believe I was serious and I was a child.
So I ended up contacting the CEO who suspended him for 2 weeks (no pay) and then gave me a few sentence answers to my question(s) as well as a lengthy apology. He understood what I was asking and replied with a simple answer. Needless to say, they had already lost me by then. I told told him I’d think about it, but I ended up deciding against them. Seriously, why in hell would I ever pay a company $10,000 when their employees don’t even know the difference between a mesh and a texture? Especially when they treated me like a child. It does not make any sense, as I have been told on several forums my posts are often clear and details, and I’ve been told I am very intelligent. (I was afraid I was the stupid person when talking to this employee, and I questioned if ‘mesh’ was even a 3D modeling word.)

I was amazed at the suspended employee’s stupidity and inability to understand the simple question of “Here is an example of a 3D model, how much minimum would a mesh of similar quality of the same model be?” and how simple it was for the CEO to reply, “Prices range from $300 to blah blah…” but how incapable the employee was.

Why is it so hard to get an answer to a single sentence question with a lot of these major companies? This may only be the second time, but I almost always have to hunt down multiple employees or the person in charge just to get a reply to a very common question. Indie contractors answer almost instantly, and some to GREAT length and detail. That’s why I decided to save my money for both 3D models and Animations by doing a lot of the work myself, and outsourcing the rest to Indie Artists.

It’s too late now, but I actually wish I got better replies from Mixamo. I actually wanted to go with them, and even if I only was able to have one animation per purchase (having to pay more for different characters of the same animation) I actually still think I would have went with them.

Instead, I’ve already spent my $300 budget :frowning:
If they’re too busy to reply, they’re too busy to make new animations.

I’d be interested in seeing more animations in the Mixamo Store.

Specifically…

2-handed animations.
Resource animations.

*2-handed weapon strikes, parries, etc.
*Mining (1-handed and heavy two-handed)
*Fishing (Throw pole, Idle fishing, Modern Fishing Pole with the rotating reel motion, rotation-less pull in for Basic Archaic Poles that are just a stick/wire, a Catch + Pull In + Grab Fish animation)
*Generic Harvesting that could provide multiple possibilities such as Forage, Sift through rock to find gold, or even an odd idle, lol. Basically just some handle shuffling while crouching)

*A looping Charge animation for both 1-hand + shield and 2-handed weapons, where the character runs forward charging with their weapon, as well as another animation to conclude the charge by striking or halting.

*Mounted combat animation for the human model on top of a horse.

*2-handed spear thrusts and slash attacks.

*Bow and arrow, crossbows, etc.

Mainly, just tons of combat animations. Guns are easy to do as a handful of animations can go across all sorts of weapons. But medieval weaponry requires a lot of different animations, so it’s not as easy.

This isn’t covered on your website and I know if might be stupid to ask…
But does your custom animation service cover facial rigging if necessary?

We could do facial rigging on a character if it didn’t already have it, yes. But thing are much faster and cheaper for you if you already have a rigged character for us to animate.

I created a separate thread for this, but I may as well ask it here too: How do you uninstall the mixamo animation store from a project?

It seems when I delete the files they keep reappearing, and the link never goes away from my toolbar.

Just delete the Mixamo Animation Store folder.

For whatever reason whenever I deleted the folder and closed Unity and re-opened it, there would be a new Editor folder with the Mixamo file still in there.

However, I opened the project folder in Windows and deleted it, and it stopped.

Note: I really love the plugin! I just bought all the anims I wanted for this project and didn’t want extra stuff in my project

I do wish there was some extra tweaking scrollbars though, maybe like: closed fists, open hands, stuff like that.

Strange,

Could have been storing extra data in your metadata. We’ll try to replicate the problem.

Glad you liked it! If you ever have any requests or have an idea for an improvement let us know!

Cheers,

look very handy …

if you don’t have it much yet , focus on some animal ’ quadruped stuff , those things are not easy to find or animate when you do it yourself

We have animals on Mixamo.com we also have animal packs available for purchase in the asset store.

But right now we can’t retarget quadrupeds due to the complexity of that task. We are currently working on a solution but it’s a ways away. So for now, biped only.

Question about the animations allready purchased.

I went to your site and I bought a few of your animations. The model looks great with it (although I don’t see the textures of the model on your site, i don’t know how to achieve that since it’s an fbx file).

I can download now the resulting file, but if i put it into unity3d… can i keep adding animations to it without deleting the existing ones? I’m worried it might lose all the existing animations I already got when I got them from your site.

Also, does the plugin detect the ones you already bought using the account on your site? or they are independant?
