New Terms of Service: Is Unity Restricting Local AI Tools and AI Training?

Sorry for the delay due to the long July 4th weekend. Due to the amount of things to respond to, I am going to use an informal tone. Just a reminder, none of this constitutes legal advice. I’ll just tackle these numerically:

  1. Yes, that is fine. If the local automation is only interacting with your own files, then you’re in the clear. If it is driving the Unity editor, that is where the terms come into play. Instead of responding to this right here, I will put something at the end of this post
  2. Bezi is not on a prohibited list but Unity hasn’t vetted it for quality and security standards so use it at your own risk for now. Again, the section at the end should help
  3. This isn’t allowed as it directly violates Section 17.2
  4. Definitely not allowed
  5. It’s OK, if being done through an authorized gateway. Now here is where I will add the section I mentioned above

Explanation of 3rd party MCPs, approval, and Core Standards:
Our goal is not to deny the use of 3rd party MCPs, custom workflows, etc. Instead, we want to ensure that the tools being used are safe for everyone by ensuring that they follow Unity’s Core Standards. You can read more about our Core Standards online, but the general idea is that this is our process of modernizing our security, and the security of 3rd parties that operate on our platform. In a nutshell:

  • Unity hold’s itself accountable for how we collect and process data, as controlled by you through the Developer Data Framework
  • We insist that in order for 3rd parties to operate in our ecosystem, they also are held accountable for following security guidelines (no stealing your stuff, no stealing our stuff, no shady business practices, etc)
  • If a 3rd parties ends up banned, it is because it was doing something not good, and will remain banned until it fixes the issue

What this means for you (and 3rd parties):
Now that we have our guidelines and terms in place, we will begin vetting and authorizing tools that meet the criteria. We will not be enforcing this restriction until we have vetted these 3rd parties, so for now, they are to be used at your own risk.

Final note, “Voice of Mike”:
My role is Principal Advocate here at Unity and that means a big part of my job is representing all of you and your interests, not spouting off corporate taglines. I want to reiterate that our goal is not closing our ecosystem, stealing data, or any other mustache twirling archetypal villain behavior. We’re trying to accomplish the exact opposite by preventing abuse and protecting everyone (like a secure platform is supposed to do), ultimately removing bad actors so that our ecosystem continues to be a place where people can thrive.
