OculusXR Package Deprecation

Unity’s OpenXR: Meta package is the recommended path for building Meta Quest experiences.

  • Starting from Unity 6.5, the OculusXR package is deprecated, and no longer recommended for production.
  • While the OculusXR package will remain available and supported across Unity 2022 LTS and Unity 6 (up to Unity 6.4), we discourage its use for new projects, and no new features are planned.

What does this mean for you?

Deprecation means that while the OculusXR package will be supported up to Unity 6.4, we discourage its use for future projects. Bug fixes for the package will be provided until the end of life for editors up to Unity 6.4, including Unity 6.3 LTS for long term support.

We encourage developers to migrate or start their new projects on Quest platforms with Unity’s OpenXR Meta package, which achieved parity with OculusXR as of OpenXR 1.14. This package provides developers a more cross-platform development experience, with access to features like Shared Spatial Anchors, Occlusion and more. Looking ahead, we expect to continue to focus on the development of new features on the OpenXR: Meta package.
