Why remove it? It allowed us to have a well rounded, Perlin noise based strips system.
Some changes were made in Unity 6 to provide a better onboarding experience and kickstart the VFX creation process. To this end, a new Template window was created and the “starter templates” were updated. The idea was to create “Starter” VFX that help speed up the VFX for the most common VFX.
With that being said, the Simple Head & Trail wasn’t removed but updated. It’s now called “Head and Trail”.
The behavior is roughly the same, and by just adding a Turbulence Block you should almost get back to the previous motion. Now, if you really need/want the old system, you can create easily reproduce it and create a “custom template” out of it. Once made, your custom template will appear in the Template window.
For more information regarding the creation of a Custom VFX Graph template, you can take a look at this post.
I wish you a pleasant day.
Thank you Orson for your reply.
Yes, I had seen the heads and trails template on VFX graph wizard that pops up when I create a new graph. I however found it to be quite different (and less useful in my case) from the one that was available previously (affected by gravity, different velocity base setup, different turbulence settings and so on…). They’re both useful and I guess I was wondering why we couldn’t have both.
I will probably open a previous version, grab the .vfx from there and create a new template from it, along with a few others that are gone as well!
Thanks again for your response.
Please let me know if you have trouble creating a new template out of it so that I can help you.
Sometime too much “starting choice” can be overwhelming or confusing and that is why we wanted to provide a “starter template list” that is relatively short. Now, I’ll gladly take feedback to improve each of those starter templates. The goal is to find a proper balance so that the Starter templates are versatile enough and can be easily customized to create the most commons VFX set up.
So, if you have ideas, feedback to improve them, please let us know.
