Unity is a globally adopted game engine that powers countless independent developers, small studios, and commercial projects. However, since Unity Technologies transferred its China-region operations to a local joint venture (Unity China, also known as the “Tuanjie Engine”) in 2024, users in mainland China have gradually lost access to the international version of Unity. As of now, Unity Hub no longer allows Chinese users to download the international Editor — only Unity China’s localized version is accessible.
It’s crucial to understand that the version of Unity distributed by Unity China — currently branded as “Tuanjie Engine” — is not simply a localized variant of the international Unity editor, it is in fact a separate, incompatible product:
- Projects created or opened in Tuanjie Engine cannot be reopened in standard Unity editors.
- It breaks compatibility with many official tools, services, and plugins available through Unity’s global ecosystem.
This is not a regional skin or language pack — it is a divergent build that splits Unity’s technical and community ecosystem. Developers using Tuanjie Engine are effectively locked into a separate track, isolated from global tools, documentation, tutorials, and collaborative workflows.
This distinction is fundamental. What’s being enforced in China is not merely a regional deployment of Unity, but a structurally fragmented product under the same brand.
We express our clear objection to this. We do not oppose the existence or promotion of Unity China, but we strongly oppose the forced abandonment of the international version through technical restrictions. Many ongoing projects have been built on international Unity versions, and switching versions entails significant risk and cost. Moreover, a number of developers have legitimate concerns regarding the long-term maintenance and consistency of the Unity China version. Taking away user choice will only erode trust in the Unity platform.
We call on Unity Technologies to take this issue seriously and to strengthen oversight of Unity China, in order to safeguard the fundamental right of developers to choose the tools they rely on.
Localized operations should be about improving service quality, adapting to local infrastructure, and enhancing accessibility — not about replacing and locking out the product developers are already using. If the Unity China version offers genuine advantages, it will naturally be adopted by the community. But currently, instead of building user trust through better performance or services, Unity China’s strategy relies on CDN restrictions, Unity Hub source redirection, and account segregation to push users away from the international version.
This is not a sustainable approach to product adoption, nor is it a respectful way to treat a developer community.
We understand that the business environment in China presents unique challenges that may require technical and operational adjustments. But such adjustments should not come at the cost of fragmenting the core version structure of Unity. It is fully possible for Unity to provide a “China version” that is functionally identical to the international version, with the same version numbers, features, and usage logic.
Currently, however, the Unity China version differs from the international version in key ways: versioning, available services, plugin compatibility, documentation, and more. Once the toolchain becomes fragmented, cross-team collaboration, version management, plugin integration, educational alignment, and multi-platform deployment are all affected. This is not just a short-term inconvenience — it actively undermines the developer ecosystem Unity has spent over a decade cultivating in China.
Therefore, we respectfully request that Unity Technologies:
- Restore access for users in mainland China to the international Unity website and Unity Hub’s official version download;
- Allow users to freely choose between Unity China and the international version, without IP restrictions or forced redirection;
- Or alternatively, provide a “China Edition” that is fully synchronized with the international version, in functionality and release cadence.
We believe that:
Optimized experience may attract users — but freedom of choice is what they fundamentally deserve.
Unity’s global value comes from its consistent tooling, open ecosystem, and developer trust. We hope the company can remain true to these principles, even as it adapts to local markets. Short-term control measures must not come at the expense of long-term developer trust and product integrity.
Unity Technologies:
- 恢复中国用户访问 Unity 国际官网与 Hub 下载国际版编辑器的能力;
- 允许用户自主选择使用国际版或团结引擎,而非通过 IP 限制与绑定策略强行切换;
