I am now developing an enviroment asset. An enviroment with the sea. So I am stuck at one moment: Which water type should I use in my asset if I plan then sell it on the assetstore? Wouldn’t it become a problem for the customers if I use WaterPro?
Personally I think those people who don’t have the pro version of Unity won’t be able to use this asset. What do you say, guys?
I’m pretty sure that functionally Unity personal and pro are identical for water-related things like shaders, rendertextures etc… If you read somewhere something needs Unity pro, that most likely refers to Unity 4 where the 2 versions didn’t have feature-parity. I don’t know what WaterPro is, but if it is a third party asset from the assetstore (no matter if free or bought), there is no way you can include that in your asset! If you are talking about some water solution that comes with Unity standard assets, then you can bundle it with your asset.
Well, it is from Standart Assets, but has a “Pro” mark in material name (look at a screenshot).
ProWater differs mainly in ability to refract and reflect, which are not available for non-pro water.
Hmm…I think I understood. Those who have Unity Pro will be able to use Pro water…for those who don’t it will be automatically downgraded on the application building…
So I wouldn’t bother. Just will Use WaterPro.
Personal, Plus and Pro have equal Feature Parity in relation to the Standard Assets’ Water. We should rename this to avoid confusion (As its most likely ‘Legacy’ naming from the Unity 4.x days)! Ive contacted the team about it.
This. In the old days there was a pro water and a free water. One of the key reasons to get pro was to get access to pro water. Pro water relies on RenderTextures which used to be pro only.
Now RenderTextures work fine in personal, plus and pro. So the asset will work fine in both.
However I’m not sure if it’s still the best way to do water. With PBR and enlighten and reflection probes and all there might be a better way to do water. Some of the graphics whizzes may want to choke on with an answer on this.
One other point to keep in mind - From reading (no hands on experience) information about the two water solutions, Pro isn’t friendly for mobile builds, so if you want your asset to be useful to mobile developers - you may want to consider the non-pro water, or roll your own solution.
