Spore Cell-Stage-Like Visuals Help

Hello everyone!

Spore is such a nostalgic game to me, and I’ve recently gotten an itch to make a game inspired by it’s cell stage. I’ve started developing the basics, such as remaking the controller used in that part of the game, and added enemy types and such. But one big issue is now looming and I figured I would ask for some help.

Basically, I’m trying to re-create the visuals that were done so well in Spore for the cell stage, specifically for the background of the game, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how I could improve or create something similar. Honestly any advice on where to improve visually to make it look more like a bunch of cells swimming around would be great. I’ll take any feedback at all.

NOTE: your idea of “improve” will be different than everybody else.

Examples of “improve:”

  • make shapes more detailed
  • make colors brighter
  • make colors dimmer
  • use a different post process filter (above is a bloom, maybe you don’t like that, maybe you do)
  • etc etc etc

Some would say “it isn’t possible to improve the above.”

Steps to success:

  • define your metric for “improve”
  • iterate towards that, probably by:
  • sketching
  • prototyping
  • trying different effects, seeing how they go together

eg, just basic gamedev design implement test refine iteration.
