U3D 2022.LTS always runs as admin

Hi all

I just installed the 2022 LTS on my win7 OS and the editor always starts as admin ( though both hub and editor have no admin flag ).

Is there a way to prevent this ?

Thanks for your answers and happy unitying !

Not sure but I would strongly encourage you to upgrade to a newer version of Windows since Windows 7 is no longer receiving security updates since the beginning of this year. To keep it running is essentially the same as leaving your front door open at night.

It’s a recently introduced bug. The Editor believes that it’s being ran with administrator privileges - even when it’s not.

To work around it:

  • In Windows, click “Start”
  • Search for “UAC”
  • “Select Change User Account Control Settings”
  • Set to “Always Notify”
  • Restart your computer

Unity will cease support in 2023, so Win 7 is still officially supported in 2022.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they abandoned Windows 10 too sooner rather than later. I just checked the system requirements and the 2023.1 and 2023.2 releases have different minimum Windows 10 version requirements.

I hope not because Windows 11 requires DX12 and TMP2 - that can only run on modern hardware. Windows 7 users with older hardware will have to buy/build a whole new system just to run Unity.

DX12 is supported as far back as 2015 for Intel integrated graphics, and depending on how strict the requirement (DX12 features or DX12 w/ FL 11.1) is AMD cards started in 2011 and NVIDIA in 2010. If the full DX12 feature set is necessary just add a couple years to the AMD and NVIDIA numbers.

Used workstations with support for TPM2 are very common. For example here is a Dell Precision 3620 (i5-6600, 8GB RAM) for $100 and the link to the firmware download that will update it to TPM2. You don’t even need a new GPU for this thing as the integrated graphics of the i5-6600 is capable of the full DirectX 12 feature set.

It will happen eventually but probably not for years. We internally think that Windows 10 is the new Windows 7: lots of people will be stuck on the last update for a long time because of increased system requirements for Windows 11. Of course this can change, I don’t have a crystal ball over here…

Thanks a lot @grizzly for the workaround
It works fine, even if it is strange to ask user account to pop messages about system changes and have no more ‘administrator’ warning… :stuck_out_tongue:

All this systems evolution ( win7 win8 win10 win11 etc… ) is nothing but a matter of profit for µ$oft and surely not a matter of security, though lots of people repeat what they hear or read. Win7 is 64 bits and could run any code ( even DX12 ) if it weren’t blocked for win7. It’s just programmed obsolescence and backdoors requirements.
Anyway i plan to migrate on w10 quite soon when i find a way to eradicate µ$oft forcing for updates and edge

@Tautvydas-Zilys I’m glad to hear that U3D team will support w10 for some more years
Could you please tell me wether or not unity would run on tiny10 ?

Thanks to all and happy unitying !!!

Sure, just like Unity 4.6 is programmed to not support DOTS :).

You’ll be happy to hear that Microsoft announced that they are finished with Windows 10 feature updates. So no need for workarounds, Windows 10 isn’t getting any more updates.

We support only full client versions of Windows. Running on hacked up/stripped down versions of Windows is not supported.

Windows 11 is a free upgrade for 10 which was a free upgrade for 7. You don’t even need to have one of the previous releases installed. You just install the version you want, tell it you don’t have a key during the set up process, wait until it brings you into the OS, and then provide it either a 7 or 10 key (which one is irrelevant).

While creating install media for my system today I discovered Rufus can remove the TPM 2.0 requirement:
