Yes, you read right. We are currently in the process of creating a PDF based “Unity” magazine for artists and programmers alike (and anybody in between really). As you may know, we decided to quit the Cinema 4D magazine a little while ago due to various reasons.
However, we believe that there is room for a new one and we also believe that the Unity community will stand behind us. Comments, thoughts, suggestions and concerns can be posted here on this forum. If you need to talk in private please email me.
So, as it is… we are looking for some helping hands. If you think your game is worth an article then please contact me. If you think you’re an artist that deserves recognition, email me. If you think you have something that is worth writing a tutorial about simple email me or use the PM system on this forum. Let’s get this going.
I am well aware of the “Unity Developer Magazine” but I believe there is always room for more.
There’s -definitely- room for more. Short story is that the Unity community has roughly tripled in size since UDM published its last issue, over a year ago.
Indeed! Well the good news is that I have already gathered a few people who are willing to write tutorials/articles etc. Looking for more though!
Secondly, I would like to get a few iphone developers to talk to me about their games. So anybody who thinks he got a great game that is successful on the iphone platform please contact me.
Also, anybody here doing games for web/facebook etc?
Great initiative, it would be awesome to have more Unity-related news on a regular basis.
Also, it would be my pleasure to talk to you about our company, Paladin Studios, and our Unity game on Facebook. It’s called EnerCities, and was a finalist in the 2009 competition.
Ahh to finaly post and to see the interest of a Unity Magazine being created!
I think this is a major step for the developers and the people they support!
Something I would find interesting amongst the tutorials is a page based on game theory.
I’ve did some assisting at my college for a time before the gov decided they would rather have me under their buckle, and I must say, many people have an idea of game theory.
An idea which I think should always be evolving, and sometimes a little help is always great!
If you were to offer a page for that I think it would be helpful.
Examples such as how can you make a boss challenging, and why. What makes a story important and when is linear good compared to a nonlinear story.
There a many examples and of course a lot of it is opinion on why A is better then B.
As for me I see that all sides of game design has a reason, and that when added properly it makes for a powerful game that holds the players attention!
I hope to hear more about this, maybe even be able to contribute what I can.
Thanks I’ll be glad to provide all that I know and can!
As for 3D and animation I think I can also put in a few points there!
Also maybe a tech page, showcasing tools supported by Unity, this way the new people who come on, can take a look at the magazine and get a clear idea of tools that will help them in the design, flow, and organization of their game.
Heck for the Game Designers, nothing is more important than knowing how to organize and files your ideals for others to read!
I think this is a great idea! I’m looking forward to it! What is your potential publication date?
Hmm… Would it be possible to publish a magazine in a Unity Reader environment? What would a 3d magazine be like? Put different articles in different areas? Have the writers represented by avatars who present their articles through in-game presentations? LOL! But seriously… I’ve got to give this some thought!
Cost is per issue. We are currently discussing if we will go for 6 issues or 4 issues per year. We will probably decide that later depending on how well the first one does.
Just wanted to say I think it’s is a good idea and I will pay for this.
Maybe you could even brainstorm about some fancy iPad format like the wired magazine prototype: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwFbwHaP5tE
With inline 3D and Screencasts.
@3devils: you write “I know, I know…” as if to say there’s no way we could do anything like that, but I didn’t see anything that Adobe’s doing with Wired magazine that we can’t do better. Easily. We are designers, artists, programmers, and writers. We’re pros. This is what we do.
I think we can do it better. They’re still looking at the iPad as a 2d medium. They can click on a movie to play it. They can turn some elements around on one plane, no zoom, no tilt, no opening the object up in 3 dimensions or even seeing what it would look like in different colors.
They do have the “scrubber” and “browser” which are nifty search gizmos. Still very flat and predictable.
What can we do with a Unity magazine? What would it look like to walk into the world of Unity?
Again, if you are your company would like to be part of the first issue of our upcoming Unity Magazine then please feel free to contact me! PM or email please.
