So this means that we can develop for PS3 soon??
So this means that we can develop for PS3 soon??
Not soon. Not at all. And to develop on ps3, you will need to pay tons of money so don’t hope for it.
You can always keep an eye on Unity Careers – it’s been there awhile.
Do you have the millions to even be able to request a PS3 dev license?
Because otherwise a Unity PS3 possibility wouldn’t make any difference to you, as you won’t be able to license it for “homebrew” approaches and alike. (Unity Wii license requirements might give you an idea of what you can expect price wise, would guess 50k - xxxk per title is reasonable due to the platforms and the minimum requirements you as dev have to fullfill like 5.1 sound, 720p etc)
Try per devkit! Plus, the submission process is very stringent - it really is for established dev studios. Thinking that an indie is going to make a PS3 title would be like the average person saying “hey, I’m going to make a new car and put it on the road”. ![]()
Console engines are always licensed per title. Neither Unity (see Unity Wii) nor Torque handle that any different.
Actually beside Unity 3D and Torque, all professional engines even have per title license fees on the pc.
You won’t find any technology for consoles that will not be per title unless you do your own.
But thats all fine.
$20’000 or $50’000 is peanuts for a single title license on consoles.
The art staff costs you already that for PS3 / X360 titles and that per month.
Also the requirements to even get a Dev license for a console ensure that your fluidity allows you to realistically develop games on the platform.
A $100’000 company wouldn’t even get the NDA to sign to learn more about it.
With such a non-backup financially you won’t develop games for consoles unless you have a publisher with a dev license who is willing to take you onboard.
As far as the dev kit for the PS3, I could of swore it was only $2,000 now.
The dev kit never was the problem I think.
But consoles are closed systems with pretty high Q&A requirements to get anything released and to protect their IP and trade secrets, only companies with the required funding to really do a project get dev licenses at all.
Just because the kit is only $2000 that does not mean that you can walk up with $2000 to sony and request to be a ps3 dev
The iphone is the only existing closed platform today where anyone can just join without company and financial requirements.
Some people likely would add XBox Arcade Live but even there you can skip the idea of entering without some real funding as already the approval process and the required changes to your game cost you thousands to ten thousands of USD.
The community game stuff is fine but not even released in the majority of the world, including Switzerland although we are one of the best earning countries (still waiting for it so I can buy their xbox game creation research thingy …)
For real console games, you can be happy if you get away anywhere in that costs if you don’t work with an experienced publisher who knows upfront what he does not even need to waste time on sending it to Sony / Ms / Nintendo
Full specifics to all these things though aside from the combined rumor and anonymous source knowledge on the web is only available under NDA from them to parties that have a chance to become licensed devs.
Still, Unity on the PS3 would be attractive even for small indie developers.
If you have a game concept that works (read: you’re selling PC copies like crazy), finding a publisher to fund a PS3 port shouldn’t be that difficult if your engine “just works” on that platform!
Speaking from experience, it is absolutely possible for an indy to knock on Sony’s door and get a dev license.
You just need a good idea.
Sony will work hard to encourage smaller studios if they believe the creative innovations (ideas) are worth their effort.
I’ve been wanting to work in Unity on PS3 for about three years now - if/when they release the port, I’ll be ready ![]()
I for one eagerly await a PS3 and 360 version… Like Dremora said, licensing fees are trivial next to the potential return.
So you already have your dev license ![]()
Sweet
Correct me, if I’m wrong, but $2000 was the price for the PSP Dev Kit. Doesn’t make a lot of difference though since you still have to go through the Sony’s application process despite their announcements about their new ‘offer’ for indies.
You are right, the iPhone OS is the only closed gaming platform that anybody can write for publish on, and make money from.
What I’d really love to see is an Xbox Indie Game version…I’d pay good money for that!
No correction needed. To get a dev kit you must apply, then only if approved you “get” to pay that money for the kit. That is only step one, from there you create your game and ultimately submit to them for release approval which AFAIK is a bit more strict than Apple’s is for the iPhone.
Anything console/gaming device related (XBox, PS3, PSP, etc.) is a different ballgame that I think a lot of indie developers just don’t know about or properly consider. That’s certainly not to say we won’t add those platforms into the mix for Unity, it’s just that companies like Sony and M.soft are great at selling the indie dream more so than delivering on it. That’s my $0.02.
It’s looking like the PSP Go is going to follow the iPhone route with regards to publishing cost and complexity. Given the hardware is half similar to the iPhone, if this turns out to be the case there should be no reason this isn’t rolled into the Unity indie license like the iPhone:
Speaking from direct experience…
The PS2 DevKits and PS3 DevKits come in two flavors. There is the DevKit, and the TestKit.
DevKits allow you to code and build and run that code on the PS2/3 hardware. These are usually for engineers, not artists and are very expensive. The PS2 DevKits were three times the size of a retail PS2, and cost $14,000 when we bought them at Midway. The TestKits are for QA and artists, and are the cheaper of the two, around $800 to $1000 per.
I have no idea what the pricing is like for the PS3 Dev/TestKits, but I would guarantee that you are not getting a DevKit for $2000. I will check at work and see if I can find someone to give me a price…
I really think that the PS3 and WII support isn’t about “hey bro, l3t’s buy unity3d and make the next Final Fantasy”. I think it’s more about a boost for the reputation of the unity game engine inside the game developer community and then a new niche market.
I’m afraid after unity get the support for the ps3, wii, and xbox360, getting a better avaliation and facing other high rank engines, it stops the support for the indie developers, because what’s better? make several small sells or a few big sells and support big studios on the development of their games? You can ask, why not both? Focus. You can’t do a good job if u don’t have a focus.
Last year i worked on a PS3 retail title, when i was @ Gameloft. We were porting a Wii game onto PS3. TVshowKing(Wii) as you meigh know is a retail title.
The game never pass the aproval process by Sony. It was too buggy.
So yes, shits happends even with big publishers…
As others already pointed out, the kit process is a different thing from your title aproval process.
BTW:
PS3 Devkit 10 000$
PS3 Testkit 1000$
