Unity Hub 2.2.0 + Win32/Elevate.A

Hello All,

I see that a new version of Unity Hub was released\installed yesterday (V2.2.0). During installation ESET Internet Security reported a potentially unsafe application (Win32/Elevate.A). Upon further investigation, it appears that elevate.exe is an (old) command line utility whose purpose is to run a process under elevated privileges. Basically it can be easily used (in the right hands) as an attack vector.

Not ideal obviously.

I can see multiple copies of it installed, one example is…

C:\Program Files\Unity\Hub\Unity Hub\resources\app.asar.unpacked\node_modules\windows-elevate\dependencies\elevate\bin.x86-32\elevate.exe

I ignored the warning for the purpose of installation (after research) but just reporting here as I’m sure you will see more of these reports in the future if the situation remains as is.

I hope this helps.

Hello All,

It seems quite a number of people having issues with 2.2.0 and it makes me wonder if it’s anything to-do with the elevate.exe issue I raised above. It’s obviously used to register\change\call something and if anti-virus software is stopping this from happening, it’s obviously going to cause issues.

I guess this is especially true on corporate networks, where it could easily be blocked\quarantined without any visual indication.

Might be worth checking your anti-virus logs and\or with network admins to see if that’s the case.

Just theorising though.
