When I try to open my project I get this error:
I’ve tried all the buttons but they don’t work, I tried creating a new project, also doesn’t work, I tried renaming the project, no luck, I tried going to the root of Unity and looking in the Preferences/Layouts folder for ‘LastLayout’ but I didn’t find that file. Can anyone help me?

UPDATE: did a fresh install of unity 5.5 (had 5.6 before) things appear to be fine now

Same issue. Had to download 5.2.4 in order to open an older project inherited from another developer. Tried to open and was prompted with these options - all of which lead to a endless loop of the same popups. I can’t even start a new project - same error. Weak sauce.
Uninstalled Unity 5.2.4, reinstalled and having the same issue. It seems as though this version will not run on my OS - macOS 10.13.4.

Upgraded from 2020.1.5f1 to 2020.1.6f1 and now I’m getting the error. No way around it…
And now I can’t even load old projects, in earlier versions, because it pops up an “Unity Editor Update Check” and then gives me the same “Failed to load window layout” error, with no way out
New learning user here. I am having this issue too.
Just downloaded unity on a new windows PC, version 2020.1.6f1.

I just fixed this in my current project. It requires you to copy /Library/CurrentLayout-default.dwlt from a different project. Here’s a link to the file if you don’t have an old project to copy it from. I would say “don’t download strange files from strange users”, but to each their own. It works for me, might not work for you.
OK, I uninstalled 2020.1.6f1 and reinstalled and the problem went away
