unity3d can make a mmorpg?

hi all,
can you make a mmorpg with unity3d or just singleplayer games?

You can create MMOs.

Cartoon Network’s FusionFall MMO is made with Unity.

You can create pretty much anything you would want.

do you need to learn c++ or something to make a game?

You will need to know C#, JavaScript, or Boo to make a game in Unity.

You will need to know more specific things for other parts of the game, such as networking, database management, etc.

Keep in mind that Unity is a game development engine. It is not a instant game-making application. You do need to create, both art and code, the elements of your game.

yeah i see but in the video tutorial the use a other engine call´t maya, do i need to buy that to?

Maya is a 3d application used for creating your 3D art assets (3D models). You can use other ones like 3DS max, Cheetah3D, Lightwave, etc… If you are looking for something free, you can try Blender. While you don’t need a 3D application to create a game with Unity, you are probably going to need 3D art assets.

hhm blender looks good thanks man

and how long it takes to learn c# ?
sorry i’m new to this kind of engines and more

Depends on your background in programming and what oyu want to do.
A month to half a year on a multi hour daily base.

As a non programmer you won’t create an MMO thought at all. Already learning all the background needed to create the server etc take months for an experienced, advanced programmer. For a beginner its a task of years.

well i need to start somewhere :?:

Don’t get disheartened, but if you’re looking for a place to start in game development, then an MMO, the most complex type of game, might be too much at start with.

Yes, and to be brutally honest you need to learn how to walk before you try to run.

Set intermediary goals that are realistic. Focus on smaller scale single player games first, as you get comfortable and learn more you can then reach higher and consider multiplayer games of greater depth. Game development is a deep and potentially complex effort, but one that will pay huge dividends if you take your time and put in the effort.

ok i will start with some little single player games but first i need to learn c# :stuck_out_tongue:
but i use the unity trail now and i have a (stupid) question: how i can make the world because in the toturial they used maya for that

It is bad forum etiquette to bury new questions in a thread on a different topic. Please post additional questions in their own threads so they can be found, read and answered by others, thanks.

Unity has limited tools for model creation. You can either create some basic primitives or terrain environments, for everything else you need to use an external modeling tool. Whether you use Maya or 3DS Max, or Blender or Cheetah 3D, or whatever else is up to you.

oh thats true sorry,
but i have blender and i dont tink i can make area’s with that  next time i make a new one

Blender is just fine and can allow you to create models/assets with ease. Go post questions in the External Tools area if you have 'em, folks will offer their thoughts and experiences with the various tools and help you make your decisions from there.

Well, I found out. To make a MMORPG game, your going to need some 3D Models, Textures, and loads of coding. For making the models use Blender, 3Ds Max, Wings3D, etc. For making Textures I highly suggest using Adobe Photoshop. It is a great for making gaming textures. And then learn C#, Boo, or JavaScript. JavaScript is the easiest programming language, I caught on to it the first time I started Unity3D. Now, to make it a online game your going to need a server. I suggest making it by hand, making the ban system, a place for storing Usernames, Passwords, Personal Account Information, and other things you need for your MMORPG. Before making this happen you should get a blank piece of paper and write out what you want the game to be about, and the storyline. Then move on to basic ideas, the GUIs (Windows that pop-up on your game), Characters, Concept, Models, Areas, Worlds. Anything that pops into your brain YOU CAN DO! It may take a year, a month, or a few weeks. You just have to keep working on it. I saw a video that a Teenager got a Interview for his MMO he made on Unity on his local news. So, anything that pops up into your brain you can do just will take some time, but that’s all right!

Hope I helped you out!

Dude, this thread is from 2009…
And no. You can not make a MMORPG with Unity, unless you have a large team of experts and a seven figure deposit in your bank account.

That is not true. Me and a friend made an mmorpg in unity that could handle ~1k players at a time. Sure they were emulated players, but in theory it could handle them.
By “large team of experts and 7 figure deposit” you mean to make a commercial or AAA quality mmo, not just an mmo. Having 1k player controlled cubes in one world already counts as an mmo.

It doesn’t matter what Unity can handle. The point is, you can’t make a complete MMORPG as a one man show, or even with two. And I speak about a fully playable game with thousands of quality assets, actually hosted on game servers. No one would play a MMORPG in a plain world with some cubes as character. And a non commercial MMORPG makes no sense, since you have to pay the server bills at least.
