I really want to help determine the direction the AI Beta should go in. As a professional developer I will never move away from Codex or Claude Code desktop apps. With this in mind i am only interested in the MCP functionality of Unity AI. Perhaps Unity could separate the paid benefits of the Unity AI program.
I am very against paying for AI credits i will never use, you can’t take Claude away from me i will not use the built in Agent ever. There are many developers like me and it would go a long way to offer us different options. I would love to fund the development of MCP tools and context understanding for my agents. But i don’t want to fund the built in assistant credits.
I been in the beta and I tried both. First you do need to have the AI subscription to even use the MCP, so you will get credits no matter what. Yes you can use Claude and codex no one is taking that away. and can help that to write code or whatever
Though the unity AI has context of unity, so getting things like the profiler, why a prefab isn’t behaving the way you want if it missing a component or it’s not setting. Or doing things like having AI put things and the scene are nice and I am unsure if the MCP can do that.
The unity AI is good for doing things in the engine and getting context of things outside scripts such as prefabs and say what scriptable objects and all their settings you got.
Yeah I am afraid Unity is not understanding the market here. I will build my own MCP tool if they don’t work on connecting to multiple editors at once. They need to isolate what they want to monetize i know my money is being wasted on things i will never use.
BTW it’s very easy to automate the processing of full profiler dumps with Claude via MCP, wrote many custom tools for it.
It seems the older version 2.6.0 of AI Assistant package does not enforce the paid subscription to allow external MCP clients to connect. I’ve been using this version for a week with Claude Code. If Unity does end up removing that version or capability, I will likely go with a third party MCP tool like Coplay.
Unity Personal — 1 concurrent MCP connection and AI Gateway access are listed as included, but the Unity AI subscription ($10/mo for 1,000 credits) is still required to activate those features. The AI Gateway and MCP rows explicitly say “Monthly subscription required.”
Unity Pro — 3 concurrent MCP connections, AI Gateway, and 2,000 monthly credits are included in the seat price. No separate AI subscription needed.
Enterprise — 5 concurrent MCP connections with 3,000 credits included.
During the beta, Unity staff have explicitly stated they’re collecting feedback on this structure. Mike-Geig (Unity) wrote in the beta thread:
“During this beta period we are collecting all feedback. If you feel like it should work differently, I highly recommend providing that feedback to the team”
Regarding post #4’s mention of v2.6.0: older package versions that predate the subscription gate may behave differently, but relying on a version Unity could delist or patch isn’t a long-term strategy. If an MCP-only tier matters to you and others, make that known while the beta pricing is still being shaped
