Same issue. I can get as far as selecting the project, then it gets stuck. The Unity process can’t even be terminated, I have to restart. I had updated to 5.0.1, but when this started happening I rolled back to 5.0.0 (which was working). Now that doesn’t work either.
Are you attempting to open a large project?
You may need to uninstall the older version, your system may not be able to comprehend that two versions of Unity are on the system.
I’ve moved all my Unity 4.6 projects to another directory.
But the problem is Unity 5 gets stuck in splash screen
whatever waited.
Before I downloaded unity 5 I had already uninstalled unity 4.6.
And I also uninstalled Unity 5 completely and I reinstalled it but it still not working.

For me, this happens even with new projects.
Huh , that’s weird maybe try and go into File Explorer> This PC>Uninstall or change a program and then uninstall unity COMPLETELY from the computer.
I Already tried it.
So, this may sound crazy, and I can’t reproduce it, but it works now, and this is what I did:
I tried to start unity. let it load until the task manager showed 0 CPU. Then I put the computer to sleep, and then woke it.
Unity then started. Haven’t had a problem since, so I can’t definitively say this solved it, but I didn’t do anything else to solve the problem.
