Hub 3.13.0 feedback

The good:

  • I really like that the Cloud column is taking less space
  • Just having settings in the left sidebar instead of on it’s own button is an improvement. Finding it used to be a bit hard.
  • Overall the new project creation flow is a bit more comfortable.

The bad:

  • The new project button feels off center.
  • The updated new project screen - especially when on full screen on a desktop computer - has the description of the selected template so far away from where you select the templates that they feel disconnected.
  • I really (still) hate that I can’t remove the Unity Version Control column and the favorite column in the project list. I will never use either feature, so they’re just wasted space.
  • Having “AI” as the top thing under “Community” is incredibly fucking sad. “You want community? People to interact with? How about talking to a computer instead?”. I know you want to stuff AI in somewhere, but this is not it.

ooh, thats pretty big re-design!

adding image, since i had not seen it yet:

Honestly, I think that label “Community” is wrong to begin with. Of the six items it lists, only Discussions is truly “community”.

Effectively, if this were in breadcrumbs style, it would read
Community/Resources

So why not just refactor-rename Community to Resources because that’s what it is, and it makes more sense given the variety of resources it contains.

Hello @Baste,

Thank you for your feedback on the 3.13 beta, it’s incredibly helpful for us!

My name is Todd, and I’m a developer with the Hub team. I was hoping you could help me understand one of your points a little bit more clearly.

When you mentioned “The new project button feels off center”, were you referring to the “New project” button on the main Projects list page, or the “Create project” button that appears in the drawer on the “New project” creation page? Any additional detail you can provide (ideally including a screenshot) would be fantastic.

As per your other points, we’re discussing them as a team and will be addressing them as soon as possible.

Hello @mgear,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! You’re right, it’s quite a significant redesign.

We appreciate you checking out the new UI. Just to let you know, we have plans for an upcoming release that will make the sidebar collapsible, which will help free up even more screen space.

If you have any further feedback, suggestions or ideas, we’re here to listen!

few small ones, but would have big impact:

  • Reordering the columns (i would prefer project name on the left side.. now its almost middle)
  • dropdown to see current project platform (or even switch it)
  • automatic search (if start typing text, it would focus in search field) and esc to clear (then no need to manually use mouse to select or clear search textbox)
  • dropdown to see current project platform (or even switch it)

Could you elaborate on this idea a little bit more? I’d love to understand your use case a little better.

  • automatic search (if start typing text, it would focus in search field) and esc to clear (then no need to manually use mouse to select or clear search textbox)

This is very interesting. Would you consider a “Command Palette” type of UI helpful here?

For example, we could introduce a shortcut like Command + K which opens a focused search box in an overlay. From there we could immediately start filtering your projects by your search query and allow you to select from the results without leaving your keyboard. In the future we could also make it possible to search for other things in the Hub, similar to how Mac’s Spotlight allows you to search for anything in a single input.

I’ll be sharing this feedback with the team as we consider improvements for a future release. If you have more thoughts or specific use cases, please don’t hesitate to share, we really value your input!

hmm I took a look, always hoping for some sort of miraculously huge improvements and it seems not so…

When are we going to get some sort of asset store integration, like I get these emails from the asset store about certain assets that have been updated that day… why isn’t there something in the HUB to show what the latest updates to assets I own it all in one place, would certainly add more usefulness to the HUB really.

I still hate that I can’t just add assets into a project before loading it and going through Unity snail reloading system and I really detest installing an asset to then wait and install the next, same for packages infact packages would the place to start making it easier to manager the package.json directly in the HUB for a project before it’s even loaded, just so many features that could be brought into the HUB to make managing projects a bit better imo.

it shows “current platform”, but how do i know what it is?

in my custom launcher it shows actual platform

that could help initially,
but then you would end up another separate results list for projects, instead of filtering the main projects list? and if its combined search, you would get random items in the list, if you just wanted projects..

ps. i’m not Hub user myself, but have been following many hub request threads over the years..

this used to be one common request too, renaming project title:

New project on the main projects list page:

I think it’s just that there’s too little padding on the right side, so the gap between the + and the left side of the box is a lot larger than the gap between the t and the right side of the box.

yes would absolutely like to have a proper solution for renaming a project

As someone who works at a company where all the Unity project is not the top level of the repository and is always in a folder called Unity, I would appreciate the ability to change each project name in the Hub.

Other acceptable solutions:

  • An option to either display the parent directory name instead of the Unity directory name
  • An option to prepend the displayed name with the parent directory name (e.g: “MyProject/src”)

Regarding the rest of the UI, I think reducing the Cloud column is great but I agree with what @mgear said, being able to reorder columns or even better, having the option this hide the non essential ones (our company uses neither Unity Version Control nor Cloud, those columns will always be a waste of space for us) would be great!

Maybe I’m holding it wrong but the “New Project” form is missing the “Connect to Unity Cloud” checkbox - so I’m now forced to use Cloud??

Did I miss something in Ts & Cs?

I have the same concern, there is no way to remove projects from the cloud, I have tons of throw away projects I make all the time, now I just get to deal with the mess. My OCD is tingling. +1 to adding the cloud checkbox back in.

Edit.

Looks like the new way to do this is to make a new folder on your PC add Assets, Packages folder. Then in the hub add existing project and target the folder - . -

Looks like you can’t opt out of Unity Cloud now.

You can still disconnect from the “…” menu but the project is still listed in Unity Cloud web. Of course, you can’t delete the project.

Archiving is not the same as delete since that is a soft delete. We want hard delete that totally removes every trace of the project. Hey Unity, I can implement a proper delete on the backend that doesn’t screw up your database and references, and with proper recovery and passes whatever compliance required. Give me access to your backend and I will do it. It is very simple.

This is just pathetic.

Just got the Hub update today. Noticing the same issue as others.
As far as I’m aware it seems like there’s no way to opt-out of cloud projects? This is kind of a big issue for workflows I deal with, as there’s a lot of test projects that have to be made, people I work with also have to do the same.
Requiring linking to an account seems like the wrong move, I’m surprised there’s not at least an opt-out option in that menu to perhaps say Local Project, give it a name, and make it.
I’m a fan of the UI overhaul, it looks clean, but this would certainly be challenging.

Okay yeah wow, just realised the last few test projects I made are now in my previously empty cloud projects.

Come on Unity. What are you doing? I don’t want every project I make be cloud hosted.

This update excludes everything everyone has been asking for for years. How would you possibly add so much fluff without even addressing the most upvoted, most-discussed requests?

In no particular order

  1. Still can’t stretch the columns - all of my projects are d:\repos\company\project\subproject\ and cuts off. Like every column that exists since the 90s, especially since there are “grabber” | pipes, I should be able to stretch them. Nay, I still cannot.
  2. Still cannot rename projects. All of my projects are named server, client or src.
  3. When a “project is already open!” unnecessary modal, it could instead just simply open the project I’m clicking on. Unity mysteriously removed the ProductBoard voter for this, despite the numerous upvotes.
  4. No support for multiple licenses, a license switcher, or licenses bound per-project. It’s a common scenario to have both enterprise license and a free license for personal projects. Why make it so easy to jeopardize the license by human mistake? Even just inadvertently opening a personal project can cause huge issues. Since you guys don’t let me rename projects… this makes it even easier to open a personal project by mistake if following common “client” names
  5. Hub shouldn’t remove projects that temporarily don’t exist (removable drive). Like 100% of all other file picker cached apps, wait until we click then us know if we want it removed instead of just assuming

I mean, who is the project manager for these decisions? The result of years of Hub development resulted in just an icon revamp and a light/dark theme toggler with some document helpers at the top. Respectfully, this is something AI, alone, could vibe code in 30m.

How many people are actually working on the hub? It feels like any meaningful updates for it are glacial compared to the Unity editor itself. And it seems one step forwards three steps backwards.

Kindly, get your project manager(s) to read and respond to this thread themselves.

Is there any way to get rid of the columns I do not want to see? The first three columns now take a huge amount of space and I will never utilize them. Would be great if they can be hidden.
