Organizing Game Development

Hey,

I am a few weeks into my first major project and keeping everything organized has become increasingly difficult. Keeping track of all of the features, all the artwork, updates, bugs, etc…

I was wondering how you keep your projects organized. Simple pen and paper or full on bug tracker software… Would you recommend using any specific software?

Really eager to hear your answers.

Thanks

There’s quite a few tools out there. It all depends on your organizational style and exactly what you’re trying to keep organized.

Trello
Basecamp
Even Google has a pile of great software for project management.

Personally, I’ve always found these tools to take more time keeping organized than its worth. I’ve always fallen back to good old-fashioned word documents and excel sheets.

Something as simple as writing a list of things you need to do can be enough.

For the solo dev there’s a nice little project management tool for $10 in the asset store. While it supports Agile-based development, it also has a simple to do list which is very useful, especially since it sits in an inspector tab, and you can add to it while your project is running. If you are in a team you may prefer an online project management solution that has time management.

It is kind of interesting how many folks overlook just what Google actually has available for individuals and small teams out there. They’re far beyond just a search engine.

Absolutely. I was just writing about that in my blog, actually.

I just wish they had more, readily available desktop widgets. For instance, I use Outlook for my email, which also has a calendar, scheduling, etc. I would happily give it up if I could get something that integrated with all my Google apps (calendar and such).

You should be able to sync your Google Calendar with Outlook.

To receive alerts, sure. But I’d like to have the calendar right there (like in Outlook). Google may have something like this. Honestly, I haven’t entirely gone through their vast library of tools.

Ah, I had just gone with the two way sync - so whatever I did in one appeared in the other.

I use bitbucket.org as both a source repository and issue/status tracker. Its really useful.

I use a handful of tools to help me sync with other people.
Sharing common scripts between projects - a soft link ( or junction in windows ) and dropbox do the magic

Sharing art and bigger files - skydrive, dropbox for accessibility or just an USB or an Ethernet cable

Collaboration on documents - Google Docs

IM - Skype, Google Talk, Facebook, Standard emails ( not really instant but still does the trick for around the globe )

Documentation and such - bitbucket wiki or google documents

Project Management - Asana ( .com ), Facebook can be quite good as well because people tend to log on there a lot more

And of course GIT for backups and file collaboration.

Thanks for all the great feedback!

Really great reading about your experiences.

If you’re looking for a piece of software to keep your story, locations, items, dialogs, etc straight and easy to maintain, I would advise Articy Draft . I really like it and it makes it really easy keep an eye on how your story progresses. You can check out some of the “Feature Videos” for a better explanation.
