Great news guys… Unity3d 4.0 is available for download! ![]()
Thanks for posting the link, the download button on the page strangely redirected me to the store.
I thought with the Unity 4 launch there would be a new learning section, I hope it’s also coming today.
Shuriken World Collision, even though it sounds trivial, is the only feature I care about at the moment. ![]()
Perhaps now it’s actually possible to use Shuriken for every effect made with the old system.
Thanks for posting that link up! The learn site isn’t coming just yet, it’s still in production but looking great!
4.0.0… I am using 4.0.0f7, now I am confused… Am I supposed to download the one from that open link?
This is real, not gossip!!! ![]()
4.0.0f7 is the final release candidate so there is no need to download again.
The installer installs 4.0.0f7 for the record.
Edit: Damn you antenna tree, you fast.
Thanks ![]()
Just bought my Upgrade from 3.5 Pro to 4 Pro with Android.
It’s time to have fun.
I was just reading the license comparison page again to check out the new features and noticed several things -
-
Is Beast Lightmapping included in Unity Free now? Cos currently it’s ticked in the Unity box.
-
Improved Cubemap Import - is repeated twice in the editor section. I suppose this must be the most exciting feature UT is excited about that needs to be repeated twice!

-
Profiler and GPU Profiler - I thought this might come under 1 feature - or at least come close together as they are related.
Lastly, I think “Dark Skin” shouldn’t be listed as a Pro feature
… makes UT looks petty that needs to throw in a non-feature as paid ‘feature’.
I love the new ‘Manage License’ option. Now that is how it is supposed to be. Deactivation and Activation couldn’t be more simple. Top marks for that one and because of it I’m betting it will save manpower compared to the old way of managing activations etc! That means you have more time now for the MakeWOWKilla() function.

Dear Santa, I’ve been a good boy all year. For Christmas, what I’d really like is a shiny new garbage collector.
That’s always been in free too (at least since 3.x, don’t know about before). But it seems global illumination is also in free now, or it could be a mistake.
Well, if GI is in Unity 4 Free (I am still on 3.5 Pro) then I may as well, install Unity 4.0 for now and continue to use 3.5 until I upgrade my pro license :)… but I do want to verify that GI is in Beast
Splendid!
Some additional new features for Unity Free!
“Low-Level Rendering Access - Need to use custom rendering techniques, bypassing Unity’s rendering pipeline? The Graphics and GL classes give you access to the bare metal.”
“Dynamic Fonts with markup - dynamic fonts for mobile games. Render asian characters at any resolution, and use HTML-like markup to control font sizes, weights and typeface selection”
“Lightmapping with Global Illumination and area lights - Add that last 10% of realism to your scenes by unlocking the true power of Beast with Global Illumination”
Also of course Mecanim and some other bits. Had my fingers crossed for render textures, oh well ![]()
Lightmapping is always included in Free (you are free to use external lightmappers). But I did specifically said “BEAST LIGHTMAPPING” which is a PRO only feature…at least in 3.x. The feature comparison box for Beast/GI is ticked in the Unity Free version now which is why I was asking.
There is a button added to the store that will now take you to the download page without having to select free/knowing the page link.
At least animation retargeting is a feature for animation. That’s something that Maya’ s and MotionBuilders’ human IK use. Very useful.
Beast has always been available in Free… it just doesn’t include GI.
Edit - if GI is checked for free then I think that’s a mistake.
