can you stop changing stuff without consulting with us - for one release?
90% won’t use this so tuck it away as an option in the build window
I’m pretty sure you have to click on “Switch Profile” if you want to change the platform you want to build to, just like how it worked before
at least should have the build buttons there grayed out (with tooltip saying why cannot build…)
now they just suddenly appear out of nowhere…
theres a big long rant somewhere about how these profiles are annoying people
Now that they have added player settings overrides, they are somewhat useful.
But to stay on topic, the build button is now on the top right and when you click a different platform it becomes switch (which mirrors the old behaviour).
There are 2 main differences:
-
In the previous build menu, build and run stayed greyed out when you click another platform, here it disappears. I think removing it causes confusion.
-
This is the main point I want to make. Why, oh why, is the button that actually does the thing I opened this window for at the top right? Is this a shift in Unity design? Can I expect other important buttons that do important stuff to be moved to the top right? For example, will the lighting window’s “Generate Lighting” button be moved to the top?
If yes, then do all these changes together so the editor makes sense.
If not, then what the frak are you doing? We don’t need each Unity window to have its own esoteric logic. I dread opening Unity settings these days, because each one is designed with completely different principles in mind and nothing makes sense.
Just because some marketing guy thought “let’s place all important buttons around our ‘Learn about our shittry services’ button, so users are forced to look at it all the time and maybe click it by mistake”, does not mean it is a good idea.
When I first opened the window, it didn’t show the entire window content. Since in earlier Unity versions the button was in the lower-right corner, I scrolled the content down. But surprise, the Build button wasn’t there.
My best guess is that they moved the button to the top to avoid having to scroll down.
The old menu does not have that problem with the button is on the bottom there. So they solved a non problem and in the process broke all previous convention.
The button could be on a bar at the bottom that is always there regardless of where the scroll is: look how to lighting window and the generate Lighting button works. You can scroll and the generate lighting is visible at the bottom regardless.
I wonder how long it’ll take before there are assets on the store replicating the old layout.
In fact they already do that, they just do it at the top:
The reason is for people to have to look at the Dev Ops button and maybe click it by mistake, that is all, there is no other reason.
I feel like we are nearing a future where the popular browser adblock extensions will add support for the Unity editor.
Stop changing stuff! Fix this! Improve this! Support this! Make it more organized! Stop changing stuff!
Man, some people are just born angry. Go touch grass.
When I see “Welcome to the new…” I slow down and look around and learn what is new, and how to do things with the new feature.
Let us know how it goes when you open Unity and there is a pop up saying “Welcome to Unity Muse, the new way to do things with Unity”.
dont forget muse is a paid sub on top of everything else
But have you stopped to ask “was this an improvement over the previous approach”? I’ve not spent long with the new build menu but changes over the past few years haven’t always been positive. For example progress bars in their own window altering the way ALT-TAB and the icon on the taskbar functions.
His wording could stand to be better but it’s very clearly a side effect of his frustrations with the poor job done by what I’ve started to think of as one of the worst UI/UX teams I’ve ever seen. The removal of the searchable context menu because in an entire year they couldn’t get it working is very telling.
I’ve been trying to give them the benefit of the doubt that it’s just management but it’s been getting harder to do.
Seems like laurentlavigne
a senior being senior that lack of angry management. If you hate Unity that made a change(s) that cause dissatisfaction, doesn’t mean you need to become barbaric too. Growth up… Oops, a senior cannot grow up anymore xD
Doesn’t mean you need to reply to it either, people get less eloquent when they are frustrated, not sure where “barbaric” comes into play.
Well, instead of using shitty language, just take a moment to speak like a regular civilized person and maybe people will 1. take it more seriously and 2. not ignore it because it seems like someone having a tantrum.
Ah, yes, of course, the actual point being made doesn’t matter, it’s all about tone and language and other pleasantries, let’s all whisper civilized nothings into each other’s ears.
Here you go
Tries to act mature - immediately goes into a personal attack. /fail
Unity is ignoring a metric ton of feedback every year. The language doesn’t matter, they ignore the saliva-saturated feedback from fanboys too. So, whatever.
@Enzi Nah, I did realized that but it’s a joke. However, your post and mine are out of topic. You could have ignore my reply tho. Just need a time this thread getting locked down.
