I agree. Some want their purchases hidden… Which SHOULD be a Choice.
I like seeing what I do own, and greyed out like the Good old store.
Reason being… I know what I own already, and can see… So .what " might go good " ,
with the assets I own already … AND yes 4 rows, absolutely, ( or a choice ) …
just look at the old and new … For me I KNOW the old store looks and feels way better, SO
I stay on looking at all the assets… You want to shop around.
And Pages are good Because>>> if I have a certain amount of time, I can look quick at
the bottom and know about how much time I have to look… at each asset in a 4 row…
and it is easy to 'figure out how long I can " window shop " Can’t see the same on a endless scroll.
I was looking at the old format and found an asset, that I am going to buy today, because it is an asset
I do not have, but need … ( work flow ) … But I found that on the old format… would not have seen it
on the 3 row format pages,
Last thing " off topic " in a bit… I am not a developer, but I miss the developer signature, things in their replies… like the asset they sell on the store… this seems to me to be a no brainier…
By “relevance” Particle dynamic magic and InfiniTREE are above Environment Bundle, in page 4 and Bundle in page 5 (1st photo)
By Popularity the Bundle is vastly above them (last photo)
This sorting make ZERO sense and make any sales impossible, as our less important and TOTALLY IRRELEVAT assets are appearing in front in a the “Relevance” sorting.
Is this some kind of a sick joke or something ?
How it is possible that something like that has passed any quality control ?
I’m actually wondering, what exactly does “relevant” mean or what’s the rule behind it? Is it relevant to you, customers, unity’s potential sale gain, to the keywords typed into the search bar? It probably works based on the rules properly, but I’ve never seen an explanation as for what that relevance is exactly.
Popularity was always and will be my favorite sorting - most reviews, most downloads, I know people got it and there probably exists a community around it. Maybe not great for fresh new assets just starting out but in this line of work we want stability and support more than anything.
I tried also, to figure out what " relevant " means… on the old store…
whether or not you have a word search …esp with no search terms…
" relevant " and " popularity " do sort things different.
How Ever … I in testing this just now… it had me go to " the new store "
There there is NO popularity sort method …SO the only way there is …
is a Sort by " stars " on the new system… this is still a bit flawed ( imho ) …
because we are trusting the " users "
BTW new assets a great way to sort is by update … the latest new asset is shown.
I can give one example now… SO there is a rpg system … I will not say the name…
as there are not that many… BUT this system wants 100 $ plus… if you did not look at the reviews , you
would see it has many many 5 stars. he had been asking " strongly " for 5 stars, so he can stay " interested " in updating it… BUT the reviews, that asset will not be getting any more
updates, the dev of that asset , told people they should give him 5 stars ( i heard this ) I do not know
100 % in any case …but the same thing did happen to me with an older asset called RPGAIO …
Point being if you just look quick and don’t read all the reviews… well it’s on you… imho…
SO, for me… to buy an asset now… the first thing I check is " last update " … the
next thing I check is the DEV … do they have a lot of asset out ? if so ?
what is the track record of them ? next read all the latest reviews of the asset I read 2 pages at lest.
It is a Bi**H imho for new devs on the store… if they only have one asset… then … how long have
they been a Unity member ?
I have had way to many deprecated assets sine Unity 5 … so now I am super careful with
any new asset buy.
TLDR: If the dev has been in unity for a long time, if the dev has more then 2 assets out…
if the dev is helpful to new embers …if the dev gives good support… lastly… if the DEV answers ALL
reviews for their asset… generally they have been around Unity for a long time,
and plan to be, lest the way I see it.
First, I’ve noticed that many unity devs, both publishers and store customers, that from web dev backgrounds. What is the deal with the trend of making everything bigger like it’s some kind of children’s book? Using whitespace on a page is fundamental graphic design. When you have navigable UI it’s even more important. This trend is maybe ok for small businesses that don’t really make much money. To drive home this point, look at the google search results. They’ve only made very small changes to the layout of results over the last couple decades.
It’s a mobile thing that popped up with front end developers not wanting or having the skill to make more media query versions in their CSS.
I’m also for the 4 column rows. Stop changing your darn interfaces. it’s a noob mistake and never goes well for sites with large user bases. Be more like google in this regard, and add depth to their existing layout. NEVER change something that people are used to using unless you have an extremely solid reason for doing so. These are often ego driven decisions from noobs wanting to prove their worth and it’s annoying. Changing a layout just for the heck of it to gather data is not something you do with your flagship site. You do it on a subsidiary or lower traffic site underma “b” brand. That way, when you screw up, it does not cost millions of dollars. You get the data you need while mitigating your risk. Have a good one. Better luck next time!
too much whitespace in general, but most notable on the left … I guess the reason is because it’s a tree that has to expand, however that can easily be resolved by changing the indent or maybe better an accordion view. The latter is just an idea, but no idea how it may look in the end, yet worth a try imo
as you can see in the first row there are different heights which are added by the “verified solution” text, maybe get rid of that as well and use an icon
another thing is the long asset name, not sure how to combat that except have what overflows at the bottom so it’s not noticable with the whitespace
“Purchased Seat(s)” is information overflow. Stick with “Purchased” or better yet maybe only a shopping cart or dollar or owned symbol somewhere
the rating may be a bit too much, maybe worth a try with an outlined single star that is filled like a progress bar? however the number of reviews is important, that’s good to have visualized (as long as it’s the number of reviews and not the number of anonymous ratings that Unity still hasn’t cleaned up)
the discounting looks odd with the discount price, the strikethrough price, the percentage, but that oddness may be influenced with the text not in line, look at the first row, it’s a wave visually … it gives the impression of something’s “broken” at the first look, there’s no harmony
Thankfully this uses the old store sorting and can find what i look for.
I wonder if the new store developers actually seen what the search and sorting returns, it just makes no sense they would have released it if they had.
I’ve just had the unfortunate miss hap of actually landing on this new asset store page, I looked around and I am not entirely sure how this is an improvement in anything? Click on something and was thankfully moved back to the old design ie the better design.
Like nothing about what I just saw was better on a ux/visual point… what’s going on how has this even been given a green light to be shown to the public, it’s like a some sort of intern project, would say reading this thread all the points have been made
And I like assets I own to be visually faded out like it is on the current store as it’s more obvious.
What is the most strange is why Unity decided to outright destroy the creation of new assets for the store and possibly remove all code assets.
It is already extremely hard to create, update and support complex systems as the return is marginal to minus if count the support hours that are endless unpaid work.
Now the store says that no matter how good, updated and supported an asset is, it will never get any exposure by using a random “Relevance” sorting, which will 100% drive away any complex asset as having zero sales without any means to predict a quality to exposure factor, would kill any asset that needs constant investment from the asset developer.
Too much whitespace? You gotta be kidding. You think the content should move when the accordian expands? Hobby websites in the 90’s followed this advice and it was one of the worst eras in graphic design. I tend to agree with you on alot of things, but wow that’s really wild. The whole point of whitespace is to excentuate content and control what you want to stand out. UX might not be your thing.
Edit: Source ask any veteren designer that’s worked on global brands.
How about how the search bar disappears after you do a search? That’s a pretty big one. Also showed me as “not logged in” despite being logged in on another tab.
