Unity and Quest 1 Deprecation

Hey there, fellow Unity developers! My name is Kevin and I’m a Product Manager on the XR team.

While the Quest 1 was groundbreaking when it hit the scene, Meta ceased sales of the device in 2020. Earlier this year, Meta announced “Changes for Quest 1” which outlined their decision to wind down their support for Quest 1. Meta will stop admitting new Quest 1 apps after January 31, 2024. Due to Meta’s decision, Unity will deprecate Quest 1 support and focus resources on supporting Meta Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro.

Unity will support Quest 1 development in the following ways:

  • Unity developers can continue to build for Quest 1 with the 2021LTS
  • Oculus XR Plugin v3.x is required for continued compatibility with Quest 1 in 2021 LTS

We recommend that developers who still need to target Quest 1 maintain their version of Unity. Meta shared additional guidance to help you manage long term support on Quest 1, including key requirements, resources, and recommendations.

We look forward to the future of Meta Quest and are excited to see what you create in Unity for Quest 3, Quest 2, and Quest Pro. If you have any questions about these changes feel free to comment below.

Could you please detail the Build Settings you’re talking about for this, and what will stop working exactly? I currently build for Android and target Run Device = “Default Device”, and the APK runs on both my Quest 1 and Quest 2 test headsets. I’m on Unity 2022.3.12. Will this build no longer be allowed (in Unity 2022) after Jan 2024? I appreciate the Quest 1 is now prehistoric by VR standards, just trying to understand what’s going to happen. Thanks.
